I smiled and whispered, “Neither have I.” I turned to the waitress and said, “We’ll call you over when we’re ready.”

“Hey, people are waiting for this table. You can’t just sit here all night.”

Being spoken to like that didn’t go over well with me, but for Joyelle’s sake, I held back my temper. Controlling my tone, I said, “We’ll be occupying this table for as long as we wish.”

The waitress huffed and walked away.

Joyelle said, “I don’t think that was wise.”

“Trust me, I was a lot more pleasant than I wanted.”

She shook her head. “But I think you forgot that she’ll be handling our food. I’ve just lost my appetite.”

Me too.

I got up and pulled a $20 from my wallet and put it on the table. “What do you say we try someplace else?”

She followed my lead and said, “I know a food truck with the best sausage-and-pepper sandwich around. Want to give it a try?”

No. But if it meant this night not ending so quickly, I was game.

I wasn’t sure a food truck would be any safer than eating what the waitress would’ve brought us, but I wasn’t about to mention that. “I was thinking more like ice cream.”

Joyelle grinned. “Now that sounds perfect.”

And safe too.
