“New Hampshire. Not far from the Canadian border.”

She chuckled. “I’ll make sure Lizzy and I bring our passports too.”

“Why?”

“Just in case you get distracted and walk us over the border. I want to be able to get back into the States because I’m only taking the weekend off,” she teased.

“I did plan on a hike, but that might be further than your friend can manage. I might be wrong with my assumption, but Lizzy doesn’t strike me as the outdoorsy type.” Probably the perfectly polished nails and flawless makeup.

Joyelle laughed. “The only time she runs is at the gym or the mall if she’s about to miss an awesome sale. But she’s great at collecting firewood.”

“Perfect. We can assign that task to Clark and Lizzy while we explore the mountains. And don’t worry about bringing your camping supplies, I’ll have everything we need. You just bring your personal items.” I learned long ago not to count on anyone else to bring things. I liked to have control over what came with us, so nothing got left behind.

“Are you sure? That’s a lot of stuff to bring.”

“I’ll have it loaded and ready for our trip. How about I send a car to pick you both up around four? That will give us plenty of time to get there and set up.”

“Four in the morning?” she asked.

“No. Friday night.”

“We’ll never make it in time to set up camp. It’ll be pitch black by the time we get there. Of course, it wouldn’t be the first time I slept in a car instead of a tent,” she snickered.

“That won’t be happening this time. Trust me. I have it all worked out. I’ll see you Friday.”

“Sounds good.”

She ended the call. Slipping my phone into my suit coat pocket, I downed the beer. I needed to get my mind off Joyelle working so late by herself. She was so…exposed. If I wasn’t more than an hour away, I might have offered to tag along.

I know if anyone questioned whether I could do my job, I’d be pissed. It was just because she was a woman, an incredibly beautiful, delicate woman, that I worried about her. If she knew, she’d be pissed, too.

That still wasn’t enough for me not to care. It was an unfamiliar feeling. I didn’t like it one bit. But at least this weekend she’ll be with me and I won’t have to worry.
