Chapter Seventeen

Joyelle

“I’m glad I get to come home to shower and change for work, at least,” said Lizzy sarcastically. “I hope you finally told him that you don’t live here.”

“The timing wasn’t right.” I had planned to do so in the morning over coffee, but Richard had left in the middle of the night.

Lizzy placed her hands on her hips and glared at me. “Should I start looking for another apartment? I mean one that I can sleep at?”

“Don’t make it sound like you’re on the street. You’re staying at my place. It’s good for you to see how the other half lives.” Lizzy had more money than me, always had and most likely always would. She hadn’t been born with a silver spoon in her mouth, but her parents lived very comfortably, and made sure Lizzy did, too.

“If you mean falling off your bed because it’s too small, I’ll pass on that, thank you.”

“It’s small, but how did you fall off? There’s plenty of room for one,” I said.

“Two. Me and Snowball. And she likes to sleep in the middle. You can imagine how uncomfortable that was for me.”

I laughed. “I swear, Snowball is the most spoilt dog I’ve ever met.”

“She’s not spoilt, just loved.” Lizzy picked Snowball up and showered her in kisses. “Isn’t that right, Snowball?”

Snowball started yapping, a loud, high sound I couldn’t stand. “And I think I have problems,” I muttered.

“You do. You’re dating a man who doesn’t even know where youlive,” she snickered.

“I really planned on telling him last night, but he seemed so…distracted.”

Lizzy rolled her eyes. “Maybe if you keep your clothes on, he wouldn’t be?”

“Very funny. I’m not talking about sex. There was something troubling him and I have no idea what it is. He seemed fine when we talked earlier, and then…something changed. I hope it doesn’t have anything to do with my conversation with his mother,” I said. Honestly, Marcy had seemed pleasant enough on the phone, but also a bit pushy. But really, most mothers are.

“Oh, good. How did that call with Marcy go?”

Marcy?“I don’t recall saying her name.”

Lizzy smiled and said, “That’s because I’m the one who gave her your phone number.”

“Okay, but how did she get yours?”

“I had given it to Clark earlier. I figured if anything happened to you, Richard would contact Clark, but who would contact me?”

That sounds logical enough, I suppose.

“I wish you’d told me about her calling you.” I never thought that was something Lizzy would’ve kept to herself. Guess I was wrong.

This means that Richard didn’t give it to his mother. Hell, he might not have even known she was going to call me. If that wasn’t bad enough, I had accepted an invitation to brunch and it was possible he didn’t want me there at all. He might feel…trapped. “Oh, Lizzy, you have no idea what you’ve done.”

“I only told her nice things about you. Like how you took that business and built it up to turn a profit. And oh, how even though you were married to a cheating asshole, you didn’t let it break you. And how you’re as loyal as the day is long. And of course, how you’re my best friend.”

I felt sick. “I thought you only gave her my number. Sounds like you gave her my life story,” I said angrily.

“Don’t worry. I left out the juicy parts. But she seemed very excited to meet you, especially after I told her how close you and Richard were.”

I huffed and said, “I don’t tell my mother anything, and there’s a reason for that. Should I be adding you to the list?”

“I swear, I didn’t say anything bad about you,” Lizzy said, trying to defend her actions.

“Lizzy, you shouldn’t have said anything about me. And definitely not about me and Richard.”
