“No, Mom. Just one of his brothers. This is the first time I will meet the rest.” And I couldn’t believe he still wanted me to go. This whole night should’ve been a major setback in our relationship. Richard must have picked up on my mother’s feelings, and without the slightest glance at me, he suggested, “Why don’t the two of you join us for the Heart family Sunday brunch?”
I had no idea how my parents took the invite because my legs wobbled and I thought I would drop. He had to be joking. Looking into his eyes, I knew he was serious. My mother was speechless. My father only stared.
“We’d like that,” my father said after a minute.
“Good. I’ll have a car pick you all up and bring you,” Richard replied.
“A car?” my mother asked.
Dad joked and said, “Or you can just leave your McLaren and we can take that to Boston instead. Beautiful car.”
Richard reached into his pocket and pulled out the keys. “Take it for a ride. Joyelle and I will be here for a while. At least until the sun sets.”
My father shook his head. “I couldn’t. I mean, thank you, but if I even put a scratch on it, I…”
“Don’t worry. I know a great body shop. Enjoy your ride, while we enjoy the sunset.”
There was no way my father was going to drive that car. He never borrowed anything from anyone. But I saw his hand reach out and take the keys.
“I’ll take good care of her,” he said.
Richard wrapped an arm around my shoulders and said, “I’ll do the same.”
My dad smiled and, and my mother’s eyes glistened. And my heart melted. If I wasn’t already in love with Richard, I was now.
When my parents headed towards the car, I asked, “Where were we?”
Richard tipped my chin up and said, “Right here.”
He kissed me so tenderly that my legs trembled. I love you, Richard.
I had no idea what Sunday would bring, but tonight, I wasn’t holding back anything.
