Chapter Seven

Clark

No one even bothered asking where I was or where I was going anymore. They all figured it was to see PJ. The only communication I’d received from my family today was a text message asking if PJ was coming to dinner tonight.

I’d been able to avoid this all my life, but now everyone seemed to be in my personal business. What they didn’t seem to understand was that PJ and I hadn’t even kissed, never mind anything serious. And because she’d been so quiet this morning, I had a feeling she had something to tell me and just didn’t know what.

Let me help.

“Before we start up that mountain, is there something you want to talk about?” I asked.

She shrugged, but that was all. Maybe I needed to be blunt. I opted for trying another tactic first. “Did you lose your voice talking with Lizzy yesterday?”

That got a reaction. “It wouldn’t be my voice I lost,” she replied.

It was a start. “Then why so quiet?” That was as direct as I could be.

“Just not sure I’m in the mood for hiking today.”

That was apparent. Her beautiful green eyes looked dark and sad. Not that she was chatty to start with, but today PJ didn’t even attempt to hold a conversation with me.

What the hell did Lizzy say?

As we stood at the base of the mountain, I realized that we were about to hike back up to the spot where I first met her.

What the fuck is wrong with me?She had been crying that day. Bringing PJ here was probably reminding her of that day. “We don’t have to. If you’d rather, we can do something…fun.”

She looked up at me and said, “Hiking can be fun. When you’re in the mood, that is.”

“True. I enjoy it. But there are other things I like as well.” None I will be suggesting right now, though.

She plopped down to sit on a fallen tree and said, “Let’s hear them.”

I sat beside her and ran through a list in my head. Many revolved around sex or at least some form of intimacy. I crossed those off, for now at least. “I enjoy live entertainment.”

Her eyes widened. “Then I have the perfect thing for us to do today.”

I wouldn’t mind going to a concert. I had no idea where they would hold one up here, but as long as she was smiling again, that’s all I cared about. “Count me in,” I responded.

“You don’t even know what I was going to suggest,” she replied.

“Don’t need to. Just point in the direction, and I’ll drive us there.”

PJ got up off the log and said, “Then let’s head towards my hotel.”

Oh, I’m sure we could make some sweet music together.

I reached for her hand as we walked back to the Jeep. At first, I could feel the tension in her grip, but it quickly vanished and her fingers relaxed in mine. If I didn’t have a manual transmission, I would’ve held her hand the entire way to her hotel. I put on my directional to turn into her parking lot.

“Not here. Just down the street,” she blurted out.

“What is it/there?” I asked, shutting off my directional.

“Our live entertainment.” I humored her and continued driving. Then she pointed at a sign that said LIVE BLACK BEAR CIRCUS.

You’ve got to be kidding.

I pulled into the parking lot and turned to her. “Am I at the right place?”
