There was no point trying to explain any further. I nodded and walked out of the wake, feeling all eyes on me as I carried the bouquet that was almost as big as I was. Well, the exes are no longer in danger of creating the biggest scene.

When I got into my car, I put the flowers on the passenger seat and sat quietly, still in shock. I’d never been fired from a job before. And this was so…public. I hoped it wouldn’t tarnish my reputation. It wasn’t like I operated on referrals alone, but a bad review could have repercussions.

My first call should be to Clark to cuss his ass out, but instead I dialed Crystal.

“Hi. What’s up?” she asked when she answered.

I couldn’t contain my frustration. “Are you sitting down? Because I have a story for you that you’re not going to believe.”

“I’m not sure you can surprise me anymore, but I’m sitting. Let’s hear it.”

“Clark sent me flowers.”

“Oh, that’s sweet,” she said.

“No. He sent them to the funeral parlor,” I snapped.

Crystal chuckled. “That’s…unexpected.”

“And totally embarrassing,” I snarled.

“They get flowers delivered all the time. I’m sure no one noticed they were for you,” she stated.

If I wasn’t so angry, I’d laugh. “They knew and I got fired.”

That changed Crystal’s tone. “Fired? For getting flowers. That’s a bit much,” she said.

“Not if you saw them. This arrangement is like a cheery ball of sunshine. Trust me, everyone noticed them. It’s the yellowest thing I’ve ever seen.” And absolutely beautiful. I didn’t bother to tell her about the card.

“I’m sure he meant well.”

“I have no idea what he was thinking, but he just cost me a job.”

Crystal sighed. “One job. Not the end of the world. But how you talk to him when you acknowledge this ‘gift’ might be the end of your relationship.”

Here we go again. There was no relationship. But she was right. He hadn’t done something wrong intentionally. I mean, I’d never told him what I did for a living. It’s very possible that he didn’t even know he sent them to a funeral home. And I’m not about to tell him, either.

It was a good thing I called Crystal first. Otherwise, Clark would’ve gotten an earful, and it wouldn’t have been pleasant.

“Thanks, Crystal. I love you,” I said.

“Of course you do. We’re best friends. Now go call him and play nice,” she advised.

“I will.” I ended the call and dialed Clark’s number.

“Hi. You’re off work earlier than I expected,” he said.

Thanks to you.

“I am. I wanted to thank you for the flowers. They’re…my favorite.” Just not at this moment.

“I’m glad,” he said. “Are you hungry?”

I was, but why was he asking? “I’m going to grab something on my way home.”

“How about we go get something to eat before you go home?”

“Are you in Orlando?” I asked. It was the only thing that made sense.
