“Cleaning up.” She pointed to the stove dripping with eggs, toast crumbs all over the counter, and the butter that had melted from the heat of the burner.

“How about you go back to bed? I’ll clean up and order us something to eat,” I offered.

She said, “I can’t sleep now. So how about you sit and drink your coffee and let me make us breakfast.”

“PJ, you haven’t slept much. You must be exhausted.”

“I don’t think I’m going to rest until I hear from Joey that Crystal and the baby are going to be okay.”

“Why don’t you call him?” I suggested.

“I don’t want to intrude,” she replied.

“Crystal is your friend. I’m sure he expects you to be calling.” And I know you want to.

She paused for a moment, then agreed. “I won’t be long.” She went back into the bedroom and I started on cleaning the kitchen.

I took another sip of coffee. At least I can make this right. It was safe to pour her one. The rest went into the trash can.

PJ was in her room longer than I expected and I was starting to get worried. Had Joey given PJ some bad news? Was she on her bed crying? I’m here for her, even if it is just to wipe the tears from her cheeks.

When I opened the door and looked inside, I noticed PJ was sprawled out across the bed, fast asleep. I walked over and pulled the covers up over her. I bent over and placed a kiss on her forehead before leaving the bedroom.

I have no idea if she had a chance to speak to Joey, but I’m sure if she did, the news wasn’t bad, otherwise PJ wouldn’t look so…peaceful.

I walked out of the bedroom and shut the door behind me. There wasn’t much to do but sit and wait until she woke.

Since everything was still up in the air, I couldn’t make plans for PJ and me. The romantic getaway where I could tell her what she means to me would have to wait.

Until then, I’ll try not to burn down her apartment.

There was a knock at the door and I went to answer it. If it was important, I’d wake PJ. It was Joey.

“Hi. Come on in. PJ is sleeping but I’m sure she’d want to see you,” I said.

He shook his head and said, “I’m here to see you.”

I had no idea what he wanted to discuss, but PJ told me how much Joey loved Crystal. Maybe he just needed another man’s opinion with what’s going on. God knows I’ve received enough advice lately - it’ll be a nice change to give some now.

“Want some coffee?” I asked. He accepted the offer and we sat at the kitchen table. “How is Crystal?” I asked.

“The doctors said she’s doing better than they thought. Guess she’s one lucky woman. Even with the blood loss, the baby is doing fine.” He let out a long exhale. “I can’t believe I almost lost them both.”

“But you didn’t,” I reminded him.

“No. But I’m not here to talk about me and Crystal. I wanted to talk to you about PJ.”

This was a conversation I expected a few nights ago. “What would you like to know?” I asked, knowing damn well what it would be.

“PJ is one of the sweetest people you’ll ever meet. But she doesn’t share her feelings very easily. You strike me as the same type of person.”

You called that one right.

“Are you asking me how I feel about PJ? Because I can tell you, she means a lot to me.” More than either of us might be willing to admit.

“She told me you flew down here once you learned about Crystal. Thank you for doing that.”

You don’t have to thank me.” And an army wouldn’t have been able to keep me away.
