"All the time," I promised, taking her hands. "I also heard you were pissy all day, ready to pick a fight if I needed some back up."

"Always," she promised. "Now, I want to know everything. Last year was so hard for you with this Path. How were your classes, the other students, and even the teachers? Is there anything hard? Basically, how do we help you?"

I leaned in to kiss her forehead. "It was a good day. Promise. Saval is amazing, Roek stood up for Anver, Zeal was all over the temple, and I think I like all of my teachers. I mean, they at least seem to know what they're doing. It was all I'd hoped for." I almost stopped there, but these were the people I could tell anything. "I just don't know what the High Priest is going to do when he hears about the lace on the guys. We all know he'll come after me somehow."

"But he can't come straight at you," Irila pointed out.

"He can come after the guys," Amerlee said. "Their immersion wasn't official. If he wants to push it, he could. We'll just make sure to bring up his lace and needing proof that he's still in Zeal's favor if he's standing against Zeal."

"That should make him back down," Shalsa agreed.

"More, since half his lace is tattoos," I reminded her. "Zeal left him with Obligation. Nothing else. If the High Priest has to remove his lace, he can't."

Amerlee was nodding, mulling that over. "So he'll come at you another way. We just have to figure out your weaknesses, and plan for the worst. We will not let him do anything without a fight."

"I know," I promised. "Thank you. All of you. It's so much easier to be this thing when I know my family supports me."

Shalsa squeezed my hands gently. "It's what moms do, Nari. We will always be on your side first. Always."
