"Promise," Ela assured her.

Nari just caught her hand. "It's just Ciella. This isn't that big of a deal."

"It is," Shalsa countered. "Nari, Kinen is now ignoring the laws of the temple. Too many of us know that his lace is faked. He's preparing for something, but we don't knowwhat. We need to get ahead of him. That'swhat we're worried about. Not Ciella. She's just an idiot student who'll never amount to much. Kinen, however, has complete control of this temple. It seems the High Priest has more say than the god we're supposed to worship."

"Which means the laws need to change," Nari breathed.

"Eventually," I told her, refusing to let her dive into this. "For now, you have one job. Zeal wants you to graduate from your initiate training. Keep your head down, give Kinen the chance to forget that you're a problem, and let this become all about Ciella, ok?"

She nodded. "I'll try, and I expect the rest of you to remind me that I'm just a student. For now, my job is to learn, not act as Zeal's Chosen."

Anver chuckled once. "Yeah. Pretty sure you don't buy that, though."

"I don't," Nari admitted, "but I'm trying to."
