My heart raced; cool sweat beaded at the back of my neck. “Vampire,” I repeated, unsure if I heard him right. He’d said it so nonchalantly, as if this sort of thing happens all the time.

“Yes.”

“How is that possible?”

“Your mother is a sorceress.”

“Thanks for stating the obvious.”

He tapped the side of his leg. “That means she is derived from a goddess. An immortal.” He clarified as if I was stupid. “While we cannot have children with mortals, male sangaree can conceive with sorceresses. It’s rare, mostly because your kind is rare.”

An odd sensation flowed through me. “Where is my dad?”

“Here, in Sanmorte.”

“Did he send you?”

He shook his head. “I decided to come on my own.”

“Lucky me,” I muttered under my breath before I could think better of it.

Fortunately, he smirked. “I’ve been tracking you for the past few days.”

I buried my chin in the throw, snuggling against the pockets of warmth. “That doesn’t make me feel any better.”

“The leaders of Nightshade were tracing you, too, and your mom. They knew how to get into the guild.”

My fists balled. “They attacked the city. Vampires had never come so far inland before.”

“That you know of,” he said darkly. “However, you are right. Normally they wouldn’t bother. Sticking to the coastal towns is easier, but they came for you both.”

All those people, who I’d known for my whole life, had died because of me and my mom. “My mom’s not the only one who was taken. My friend, Draven, he’s here, too,” I explained, hoping it was true because the alternative was too hard a pill to swallow. “Where can I find him?”

“I’m not a map, you know. I don’t know where they are. Your friend could be anywhere, in a blood den or sold in an auction. As for your mom, she’s probably being held by some rich family, or Nightshade.”

“I need to find them both.”

“It’s not safe for you to leave the house. I’ll ask around to see if anyone knows anything.”

“That’s it? I’m supposed to wait on you asking around?”

“Yes.”

I ground my teeth. I’d have to figure out a way to find them myself because he sure as hell wasn’t going to help me. Instead, all I could do was squeeze out any more information which would be helpful, although the truth about my dad, if this vampire was being honest, did itch at me. “So the order—Nightshade—they want me dead because I’m part sorcerer, part…?” Every hair on my body stood on end as I realized what this meant. “Am I part vampire?”

“No. You can’t be both magical and a vampire. You have to be one or the other.”

“Then why are they after me?”

“They wanted a sorceress,” he said, but I got the impression he was lying.

For every question answered, I had a hundred more, but my head ached. “I’m tired,” I said, hoping he’d leave.

He shoved his hands in his pockets, standing. “Do you want some food?”

My stomach rumbled in response. “Don’t you just have blood?”

His lips curled at the edges. “We had mortal food brought here for you.”
