“Not if you change me. We can get away.”

“You being a sorceress is the only reason we’re still alive, but it won’t last long. Even Sargon will have to come to terms with the crime you foolishly admitted to. He can’t pardon such treason.”

I blinked back tears. “I hate her.”

“Who?”

“The Princess of Asland. She lied through her teeth about you.”

“She was told what to say by Kalon, I’m certain. He offered to turn her once he realized our plan.”

“How did he find out?”

“Erianna’s taster friend may have spilled the truth, or more likely, one of our conversations was overheard. He has spies all over the castle. I should have communicated with you on paper only.” He bent forward, burying his head in his hands.

“Stop blaming yourself. This is on all of us. We shouldn’t have been stupid enough to think we could have taken him on in the first place.”

“If you’ve lost faith,” he stated, “then we’re all screwed.”

“I was going to say the same thing to you. What happened to surrendering and having faith?”

“You got dragged into it with me, as did Erianna and Zach. I don’t even want to think about what they’re doing to Anna without Zach’s protection.”

A lump formed in my throat. I blew out a fogged breath, rubbing my arms to try to instill some measure of warmth into my icy skin. She hadn’t even crossed my mind until now. “I’ve never been much good at anything, really,” I admitted after a few minutes. “But since being here, I’ve finally found my powers.”

“Which is why you can’t lose them to vampirism. There’s a reason they call it a curse.”

“If only I could remove these chains.”

“Only Azia can take them off,” he said regretfully.

“I assumed as much.” I bit down on my bottom lip, running my tongue over the dried cracks. “When I was with Astor, he let me believe I wasn’t supposed to amount to much, and that was okay. At the time, I thought he accepted me when my mom wouldn’t, and not having any expectations was comfortable. My mom was always pushing me, and until now, I thought it was because she was disappointed in me. I know now she wanted me to be the best version of myself.”

He nodded, and I coughed, my chest heaving from the dry, cold air.

“I never thought much of myself, but now I think about how I set fire to Kalon and….”

“You did what?” he choked out.

“Oh, yeah, you weren’t there. Kalon wouldn’t let me go, so I electrocuted him.”

“Fucking damn. I’m sorry I missed it.”

“Me too,” I smirked. “But that’s why I can’t give in yet. If I’m going out, I’m doing it on my own terms, so please, change me.”

“We will die trying to escape here.”

“Maybe, but at least we’ll have a chance.”

“Olivia—”

“Please, Sebastian, don’t ask me to tell Sargon again. I’ll never do it. I’m asking you to turn me. At least, think about it.” I yawned, fighting against the tiredness, but the lack of sleep slowly dragged me under.

“Get some sleep. I’ll think about it.” Something changed when he looked at me, and I yawned again, my eyes watering.

“Promise me.”

“I promise.”
