Her eyes pinned me across the room. She was different, not quite vampire, but no longer mortal. My eyebrows creased, and in her immortality, I felt something different. My jaw slacked. It was impossible. Of course, I heard the stories but put no thought into them.

I felt it, like a tangible pull between us. It explained why I couldn’t stay away from her when she was mortal, even when I tried to. Everything in my heart and soul wanted to protect her, to hold her close and take her as mine. The startling revelation sank into me, and I stilled.

She’s my soulmate.

Flicking my eyelashes up, I peered at Sebastian. Everything about him was suddenly all-consuming. The smell of his warm, musky cologne filled me, flooding memories of when we’d made love. Arousal slicked between my legs, my thighs clenching together as I recalled the feel of his lips against mine. I walked slowly, as if I was being guided by invisible strings.

Something changed in how he looked at me, eyes widening in surprise, his expression the only movement on his body. A lump bobbed in his throat, bringing my gaze to his tattooed neck. Stepping into his space, I lifted my chin, his intrusive stare capturing my soul, as if he could see into all the dark places I buried.

My heart pounded as I waited for him to speak.Say something. Anything.

Inhaling sharply, I pulled my eyes away from him. The compulsion was too intense, and I could absorb his emotions without even touching him. Shock tore through our connection, bringing with it everything hidden. All the secrets and lies surfaced, coiling around me in a desperate heartache, a clawing for redemption, enveloped by the desire to do the right thing. It was as if I was him.

Shaking my head as if to scatter the thoughts of him, I let out a small sigh. I had work to do, and I was clearly experiencing heightened emotions with my immortality. That had to be why I was so drawn to him. Why I couldfeelhis soul. It was the empath in me, enhanced.

Magic pulsed through my core, matching the energy of Azia, who stood across the room. His gaze bore into my back, as if he were trying to reach inside of me to figure out what I was.

Because now, everything had changed. The gods had given my new purpose and given me the greatest gift of all.

I glanced behind me, fear swelling in my chest as I glared at my father and his crown. I spotted Niall watching me, his brown eyes widening as he took me in. He had spilled the venom, supposedly by tripping, but everyone knew vampires seldom made such blunders. Even Kalon had to know.

Niall saved my life. I just wanted to know why.

It was torture watching her come to the slow realization that Sebastian was her soulmate. Seraphina glanced at me, then at the venom, before turning her attention back to Sebastian.

The corner of my mouth twitched as I watched them. He just stood there, looking at her, his eyes just as wide as hers.Do something. If I were him, my mouth would have been on hers before she could take her next breath.

Fucking soulmates.

I was always planning on killing Sebastian, but now it would destroy Seraphina. No matter, I was patient. I’d waited this long for the crown, and if becoming a prince meant I had to wait for her to grieve before charming her into marriage, then so be it.

We had forever. That was the beauty of immortality.

Father was annoyed. I could see it in the restraint in his eyes as he forced a smile. Sargon was watching, after all.

I stared at the spilled venom on the stone by the altar. It was a brilliant plan to lace the venom with the herbs to keep her trapped in death. The king would never have figured out we were behind it. People often got lost between the living and dead. But I couldn’t let my father kill my future bride. Seraphina was the very thing I’d been waiting for. Her coming back was an opportunity to take the crown I deserved.

I tilted my head, watching after her as she glided over the ground, her red curls dancing down her back. She was a prize, and Sebastian was so ungrateful. He hadeverything. A crown. A princess. Power. Yet he moped around, brooding as if his life was so difficult.Please.

The hallowed glow from the candles soaked around her as she swayed her hips, her gaze lifting to Sebastian as she moved past him. Immortality suited her, but there was something different about the princess. From her skin's subtle but translucent radiance to the sudden grace in every elegant step, it was as if the bloodlust didn’t affect her. She raised her gentle hands to her teeth, searching for the fangs, blinking slowly as a wrinkle formed between her brows.

Something was wrong.

She left the room, leaving Sebastian staring after her, rooted to the spot. Father placed his hand on my shoulder. I’d forgotten he was standing next to me for a moment. “Clean that up.” He pointed at the venom glistening over the smooth stone. “Now.”

Restrained anger laced his words, but he didn’t need to worry. I wasn’t about to let Sargon or his righteous sorcerer touch it, to find out what else was mixed in. Else we’d all have been screwed.

Sargon grabbed Raven’s wrist, tugging her to follow their daughter. Her expression darkened, sharpening her bold features as she glared at him with as much hate as I had. As Kalon did.

I wondered if he knew so many in this room, people he believed loved him, would instead enjoy killing him. Father’s resentment had hovered over us like a black cloud for years. He was the one who took care of all political matters, including slipping the idea of inviting the King of Asland here.
