Avery closed his lips, biting the inside of his cheek to keep the words in his mouth. Once they were out in the main hallway and away from the orgy, the emotions of everything he’d witnessed and the knowledge that he was likely pregnant hit him.

He sobbed, tears falling.

“It’s okay. You’ll be safe in the clinic,” the doctor said. “I’m Dr. Middleton… and I believe you’re Avery Stephens?”

“Yes,” he said between sobs.

“I’ve been meaning to check in with you before today, but thanks to severe budget cuts, I’m the only doctor on staff and I’m behind on reaching out to my newest patients. Sorry about that. I might’ve been able to detect your pregnancy earlier and keep you from seeing that scene.”

“No,” Avery said, wiping the tears away and stiffening his spine. “I think I needed to see it. Needed to know this is what they do to omegas inside these walls. It only strengthens my resolve.”

“Your resolve?”

Avery wasn’t sure how much he could trust the doctor. He shook his head, waving the comment away. They took a turn down a hallway Avery hadn’t traveled before. After another series of locked doors between, he was ushered into the clinic.

“Take one of the beds over there,” Dr. Middleton said before closing the door behind them.

There were about a dozen beds and only two of them were filled—both with older omegas who didn’t appear well. He sat down on a bed directly across from the door and watched as Dr. Middleton washed his hands thoroughly. When the beta was done, he came Avery’s way and pulled a curtain around the bed for some privacy.

Pausing before Avery, he sighed. “You must’ve come in pregnant.”

“Seems that way.”

Middleton brushed a stray tear from Avery’s face. “I know it can be a major shift in your world to learn you’re pregnant. And finding yourself pregnant, in prison, isn’t much better. Consider it this way: the fact you’re pregnant saved you from that madness out there.”

“True,” Avery replied, wiping another tear away. For now.

The doctor rolled a squat seat closer and sat down. “I’m going to do a couple of tests to confirm your pregnancy and then we’ll do a few tests if those come out positive.”

Avery nodded. He was willing to do just about anything if it meant he’d stay out of that cage, but he was curious. “What tests?”

“Just to make sure you’re in good health, that’s all. For now, I need a pee test and a blood sample. After that, you might as well lie down and get a little rest. Today’s been hard emotionally and physically, I know.”

“Thank you,” Avery said.

“For?”

“Getting me out of there,” Avery said. “And… being kind. Not too many in charge around here have been.”

“I’m sorry about that. There’s no reason we have to be cruel.”

“Like Remington.”

The doctor shrugged. “Like a lot of them.” He tapped Avery on the knee. “Head on into the restroom at the far left end. There are urine sample cups inside and directions on the wall. I’ll get the other test prepped while you do that.”

“Okay.” Avery hopped down and did as directed. Soon after he’d finished in the restroom, he had given a couple of vials of blood.

“Rest up. You’re safe here,” Dr. Middleton murmured as he walked away with Avery’s sample.

Rest? His mind was too frenzied for rest. All he could think about was Wilder… and wondering what his alpha’s reaction would be to learn there was a baby to come. He lowered a hand, caressing his flat stomach.

A baby.

Wilder’sbaby.

A smile couldn’t stop itself from forming. During all that terror, he had one good thing to hang onto.

One good alpha, too.
