A hand went to his stomach. The babe he’d made with Wilder would take most of his time, he was sure.

Panic set in. What if the province took their child?

“I nearly forgot to ask… did the prison inform you I’m pregnant? I didn’t think to tell you the other day. I was so gobsmacked by what Wilder was doing.”

Both Rohan and Tensen’s stares flipped up at him. A hush fell.

“No, they didn’t,” Tensen murmured, his voice low.

“Wilder’s?” Rohan asked.

“Of course it’s Wilder’s,” Avery barked.

“Sorry,” Rohan asked. “I assumed, but wanted to make one-hundred percent sure.”

“Can the province take our baby?”

Tensen nodded. “They can… though I suggested Wilder sue for full custody in the event you were pregnant.”

“You did?” Rohan asked.

“Yeah, the last time he checked in with me.” Tensen tapped his laptop again. “I’ve got the documents ready to go. We can submit them today, too—with Wilder’s approval.”

“Full custody… meaning I’d have no rights to my child?”

“If you’re still in prison, you wouldn’t have any,” Tensen said. “It would be better than the baby going to strangers.”

Avery wrapped his arms around himself. For something he’d viewed as a roadblock to his future… he couldn’t imagine losing their little one. It was harder to breathe just thinking about it. “I suppose.”

“We’re going to do everything in our power to get you out of here, Avery,” Tensen said. “But we need a back-up plan to protect your child. Agreed?”

Avery nodded, unable to speak. They’d have to protect the child he might not be able to. Tears swelled in his eyes, and doubt struck. It was one thing to make a stand when it was only him. Now the child might suffer because of his choices.

Rohan took his hands. “Avery… it’s okay. We’re going to fight like hell for both you and the babe.”

He squeezed Rohan’s much larger hands. “Thank you,” he struggled to get out.

“How about we get some good food in your belly? I'm confident they serve slop next door.” Rohan released his hands.

“Not sure I have much of an appetite today.”

“I’ve got your uncle’s favorite pho place saved on my phone. He told me you liked that.”

Avery scoffed. “Under normal circumstances.”

“You’re eating for two now. How about you try a little?” Rohan asked.

Avery nodded.

“Okay.” Rohan smiled. “After you eat, we can get you out of your prison uniform and into a nice, clean suit.” He lifted his phone to his ear. “Which pho do you want?”

“Just some beef broth,” Avery said at first. But then the realization that he might not have pho again for years hit. “No… if it’s Min Pho, get me the number three. Add a summer roll.” He thought for another moment. “And some bubble tea. Jasmine with dragon fruit flavoring… and mango balls.”

“You got it,” Rohan said.

Avery wasn’t sure he’d eat or drink much of it, but he’d get a few last tastes in before he buckled down for another month… or more… behind bars. He rose from his seat and crossed the room, moving to the window.

He allowed the chants and visual from outside to buoy his drowning hope. From his vantage point, he noticed his alpha standing head and shoulders above many of the rest. A big, blond alpha. He smiled as the man turned slightly.
