“I haven’t really thanked you for stepping in for me the past few weeks.”

Vaughn ran a hand through his raven locks. “It’s given me the opportunity to stretch my wings a bit.”

“Thank you.It means the world to me. You didn’t deserve me coming down on you and accusing you of what I did.”

His brother met his stare. For the first time in his life, he felt a sense of brotherhood with Vaughn. Wilder had kept him at arm’s length for far too long. It wasn’t fair.

“Perhaps this was just my way of showing you I’m innocent. For once.”He scrubbed a hand over his face. “Oh, by the way—I forgot to tell you. My investigator has been doing some intense digging regarding who turned Avery in.”

Wilder’s face warmed. “And?”

“I was able to get the master video from that night. It’s in your top desk drawer. I can’t say there aren’t copies, but I don’t think there are.”

“Thanks.”

Vaughn smiled wickedly. “The security guard that night? Guess who his uncle is?”

Wilder held his brother’s stare for a moment as realization washed over him.No. It can’t be that easy.“Hardwick?”

“Bingo.”

“Thatson of a bastard,”Wilder cried.

“Just another link connecting Hardwick to a plethora of crimes between these walls. He’s likely the one who had Avery arrested.”

Wilder clenched his fist, only to have pain lance up his arm. It cooled the fire inside. “Speaking of Hardwick, have you had any word from Reece and White? We need him gone. ASAP.” The sooner, the better.

“They’ve got us on their schedule… but it’s going to be a few weeks before they can send an investigator.”

“That’s too long.”

Vaughn shook his head. “From the news I hear, perhaps we can allow Avery finish doing the digging once he’s freed.”

All the air left Wilder’s lungs. “I don’t know what’s going to happen in the end. I’ve tried being hopeful—for him—but…” He winced. “It gets harder as the days go by.”

“Don’t take your foot off the gas pedal just yet. The boycott has caused all kinds of headaches. Traffic jams all over town. The executive council couldn’t meet. People were complaining on the news last night. Alphas are worried. They’ll give in. Perhaps not all the demands will be met, but you need to start somewhere.”

Wilder chuckled. “Who thought we’d be here, you and me? Vaughn giving Wilder support and encouragement.”

His brother smiled. “The world really is crazy right now, huh?”

“One day, I hope to do the same in return,” Wilder murmured.

“That…” Vaughn swallowed. “That would be nice.”

“I better get back to my desk and see if I can catch up on what’s going on,” Wilder mentioned.

“Yeah, and I suppose I should unpack. For now.”

Wilder smiled. “Glad you’re staying.” Another thing he wouldn’t have said weeks before.

“I’ll come and update you on projects in a moment,” Vaughn said. “Let me have a minute to get my head straight.”

“Sure thing,little brother.”

Before he could return to his office, Rohan raced past him in the hallway. “Sorry, I need to go!”

Wilder ran to catch up, finding the alpha bouncing from leg to leg, awaiting the elevator. “What’s wrong?”
