“I’m not going anywhere anytime soon.”

A broad smile spread across the man’s face. “Good to know.” He twisted, grabbing a stack of messages. “I’ve got a few things for you to check.”

“It can wait,” Wilder said. “I’m likely going to celebrate with my family.”

“Yes, sir,” Frey said with a grin. “On hold, it is.”

Once at his desk, Wilder called Lake. “How’s he doing?”

“Ask him yourself,” Lake said, his voice bright.

Seconds later, Avery came on the line. “Hi.”

“Hey there, baby. How are you feeling?”

“Better, I suppose.”

Wilder relaxed some. He could hear more strength in Avery’s voice. “Have any of the doctors been in to see you? Did I miss anything important?”

“One doctor came in to check my wounds and said things were improving. Another came in and said once I’ve healed a little more, they’re going to attempt an ultrasound, maybe tomorrow or the day after. He said it’s early in the pregnancy… and with the wounds, he’ll have to be careful and not push too hard, but they want to check if they can see anything.”

“That’s a good idea, but I don’t want them hurting you, either.”

“I’m sure I can manage. I want to see that the baby is okay. Hear the heartbeat.”

Wilder smiled. They still had yet to have a conversation regarding how Avery felt about having their child, but hearing concern was a good sign.

“Lake said you had a work emergency? Is everything okay?”

“Everything is wonderful. I just got out of the board meeting. If you’re okay, my father’s asked that my brother and I join him for lunch to celebrate a victory.”

“Oh? What are you celebrating?”

“Long story short… me keeping my job.”

“Woah,” Avery said. “I wasn't aware you were in jeopardy of losing it.”

“No worries, we’re all good. I can fill you in with details after lunch, okay? I shouldn’t be too much longer.”

“Okay. I can’t wait to see you.”

Warmth filled Wilder’s chest. The chaos that had been circling them appeared to be finally calming. His omega would soon be in his arms… forever.

Or so he hoped.

“I’ll see you soon, my love.”

“See you soon.” The line clicked, the call ended. It was then that he realized Avery had never said those words back to him. He’d gotten a “me, too” once, but nothing else. Yet he knew it. Sensed it to his very bones. His omega loved him. He was sure of it.

“Ready?” his father asked from his open office door.

“Absolutely,” he answered, shoving his phone into his pocket and doubt swimming in his head. He knew Avery cared for him but, did his omega have the same strong feelings?

Aknock came at Avery’s hospital room door. He looked up and saw Tensen there, a grin spread wide across his lips. “How’s the patient?”

Avery returned the expression, happy to have someone to ask the million questions swirling in his head. He’d awakened to find Lake—who clearly knew less than he did about the whole situation—so he’d been bouncing off the walls for hours.
