The tech plugged the machine in and clicked a few buttons in preparation. He moved closer to the bed and peeled Avery’s blankets and sheets away. When he saw the bandages under Avery’s hospital gown, a slight frown came to his jovial face. When he lifted the bandages, Wilder saw the stab of concern cross the tech’s face.

The man looked up, smiling feebly at Avery. “Looks like I need to be careful here. I’ll do my best not to cause you any pain.”

“Thank you,” Avery whispered.

The tech squeezed a clear jelly on Avery’s stomach and then lifted a sensor of some kind. He pressed it to Avery’s abdomen. “Breathe slow and steady for me. I might have to press a bit harder from time to time to find him. If it gets too much, you tell me, okay? Don’t play the tough one… we can always try again later.”

“I need to know the baby’s okay,” Avery murmured.

“I know.” The tech smiled. “We’ll do our best to find out.”

“Your health comes first,” Wilder said, forcing Avery’s focus in his direction.“Youcome first.”

Avery offered a pale smile before refocusing on every movement the tech made.

The tech ran the sensor all over Avery’s stomach, stopping here and there. Wilder watched the small screen on the equipment between glancing at the tech’s face for reaction. The man gave nothing away… until a frown came to his face.

“I’m going to have to push a little harder here.”

Avery’s hand tightened on Wilder’s.

“If it’s too bad, stop him,” Wilder reiterated, noting the strain in Avery’s face.

Avery met his gaze a moment before turning back to the screen.

Minutes stretched.

The tech searched.

Wilder held his breath, willing the man to find something.

Anything.

Suddenly a heavy pulse sounded over the machine and a smile burst over the tech’s face.“Therehe is. The little bugger was trying to hide from me!”

Wilder released his pent-up breath, joy filling him. He observed the screen, seeing the tiny skeleton. A flutter happened midway, the heart beating.

“That’s a nice, strong heartbeat,” the tech announced.

Wilder turned to Avery, who watched the screen, smiling brightly. The babe’s legs suddenly kicked ferociously, earning a cry of delight from his omega.

Pictures were taken on screen. Measurements made. A couple of the pictures were printed out and handed to them at the end. “There you go, papa and daddy.”

Wilder took one of the pair and smiled at the little alien presented to him.

“He’s okay? You didn’t see anything wrong?” Avery asked.

The tech brought out a towel and wiped the remaining jelly from Avery’s belly. “I didn’t see any reason for concern. You have a strong baby there. You saw that kicking—he’s a fighter!”

Avery grinned, holding Wilder’s hand with one and the picture in the other.

Wilder leaned closer, giving his omega a kiss. “He’s going to be okay.”

Avery’s smile in return was dazzling.

And Wilder could breathe again.

After another few days in the hospital, they released Avery into Wilder’s care. He’d spent hours making sure his place was spic and span before arriving at the hospital to pick up his omega. The car ride was quiet—Wilder had opted to use his driver rather than force Avery to climb into his low sports car. He’d have preferred to be alone, though the privacy divider gave them some discretion. Wilder kept sneaking peeks at Avery on the way. He got caught a few times, and Avery offered warm smiles.
