Page 193 of His Reluctant Omega

Wilder met his omega’s stare, unable to stop his own smile from forming. He stepped back. “Come in.”

He glanced over a shoulder and saw his papa aghast at the scene—his omega, in shackles, hauled in between two guards. Embarrassment—or was it anger?—flowed through him. He hadn’t wanted them there to witness Avery’s arrival for that very reason… it would only add fuel to their fire.

Avery’s focus turned to them as he entered the apartment, his face growing red with shame.

One guard turned to uncuff him while the other one drew out a clipboard. “You left without signing the affidavit.”

“I can sign it now?” Wilder asked, marching forward.

“It would’ve saved a whole lot of time if you’d been there to sign it,” the guard complained.

Wilder turned to Avery. “Sorry.”

The guard sniffed. “You’re apologizing tohim? We missed our dinner tonight because of you.”

“I’m sorry,”Wilder snarled, trying to hold back the sarcasm and failing.

“Sign here,” the guy said before going into a long-winded spiel regarding the rules and regulations, what Avery could and couldn’t do. When he was done, Wilder handed back the clipboard, forms signed.

The other guard began screwing a box into the wall beside Wilder’s front door.

“Hey,”he cried.

“They listed it in the document you just signed,” the first guard said. “It’s the box that controls the data from his ankle bracelet.” He waved to Avery’s ankle.

There was a thick black cuff around it with a blinking purple light.

“If, for any reason, the light turns yellow, you must call in and explain your situation within five minutes or else we’ll dispatch officers to his location. If Mr. Stephens is not in the apartment, or at another approved location, he will be returned to prison for the rest of his sentence.” The guard looked between them. “Questions?”

Wilder realized he’d likely have a million later on, but nothing came to mind. Not when he finally had Avery back in his arms. He glanced at his omega. Avery shook his head no.

“I think we’re good.”

The guard looked around the apartment. “Nice digs for a criminal.” His gaze lingered on the table.“How nice,”he cooed before looking between them. “You have a pleasant night.” Pointing at Avery. “Don’t you leave, or I’m coming to find you.”

“Goodbye,”Avery said with a forced smile.

The pair walked out, closing the door behind them.

Wilder moved closer to Avery, tossing an arm around his omega. Eventually, his parents would need to meet the papa of their grandchild, so he might as well get it over with.

“Avery, these are my parents. My papa, Wynter Jaymes, and my father, Warden Jaymes. This is Avery Stephens, my omega.”

Both his parents stood silent, eyeing Avery.

“It’s very nice to meet you,” Avery murmured, inching closer to Wilder.

“I’d say the same, but considering the recent news, I’m not so sure I can call it nice,” Wynter spat.

“Oh, you won’t enjoy the freedoms my incarceration will now afford you?” Avery asked. “But then, I’m sure there will be a lot ofolder, traditional omegas who’ve gotten so accustomed to being under their alpha’s thumb that they wouldn’t know how to wedge themselves out, even if you showed them the way.”

Wilder hid a smile.

“Howdareyou,” Wynter seethed.

“Look, I’ve already heard how you treated Jamie. I only said it was nice to meet you in an attempt to be polite to my alpha’s papa. You haven’t afforded me the same, so, I guess the gloves are off,” Avery said, a sweet tone to his voice, belying the words coming from his lips.

Wilder lifted his chin higher, proud of his omega for the millionth time since their first meeting.
