“A little while,” he admitted, sheepish. “I didn’t want to ruin the party.”

“Ruin the party?” Wilder asked. “Why didn’t you say something sooner?”

“Last week we rushed to the hospital for it only to be false labor. I wasn’t ending the party early for no good reason!”

Gray chuckled. “We’ll meet you there. Tell your driver to step on it.” He closed the door.

Wilder focused forward. “Did you hear that?”

Their driver smiled in the rearview. “Loud and clear. Hold on.”

“I’m not giving birth in the back of this car,” Avery announced. “I’m holding him in until we get there.”

“You might not have a choice,” Wilder said.

“Of course I do. Get me to the fuckinghospitallllllllllll.”He winced, breathing through the pain. “Now.Please.”

“We’re going as fast as we can,” Wilder said seconds before they took a corner a little too fast. They both slid onto the seat. Avery was quite sure that Wilder’s firm grasp and stronger legs were the only thing that saved them.

It wasn’t much longer before he was being wheeled into the Paternity Ward, screaming in pain. The baby wasn’t listening and was coming as fast as he wanted. They scarcely got Avery into a bed when their obstetrician arrived.

Not twenty minutes later, the baby’s head was visible.

Wilder held Avery’s hand and rubbed his back as he knelt on the birthing bed. “I can see him, baby… he’s almost here. Just a little more pushing. You’ve got this.”

Avery pushed with all his might, screaming from the pain. Sweat soaked his forehead and hair. He wasn’t sure he had much more strength. “I can’t… I can’t do this.”

“Yes, you can,” Wilder urged. “You’ve changed the world… this isnothingby comparison.”

Avery met his mate’s eager stare. “I can’t.”

“Yes, baby… you can. Just look at me.” Wilder caressed one cheek. “You can do anything you put your mind to. You’re the strongest man I know.”

Avery sobbed, tears in his eyes.

“Come on, baby… not much longer.” Wilder whispered.

Avery collected every ounce of strength left in him, and then some. He pushed with everything he had when the doctor told him to.

“The shoulders are almost out. You’ve got this, Avery,” the doctor cried. “When I tell you, I want you to push as hard as you can. Okay?”

“Okay?” Wilder asked him when he didn’t respond.

Avery took a deep breath, his body weak. Wilder lifted his chin. “Baby… okay? One more big push for me?”

Avery wasn’t sure he was capable, yet he nodded, ready for it to all be over.“Okay…”

Wilder released a breath and pushed back his sweaty locks. “Get ready.”

“Come on, Avery… push!” the doctor cried.

Avery gave everything he had left, screaming as he bore down. Seconds later, he felt the babe pulled from him and the pain ease. He collapsed forward, Wilder catching him.

A cry tore out, a healthy, vociferous cry that was music to Avery’s ears. Laughing, he turned slightly, seeing his son for the first time. Tears came, making it harder to see. He reached out, needing to touch the babe to know it was real. The doctor moved closer, offering Avery a caress of a tiny hand.

“You’ve got yourself a healthy omega, if I had to guess,” the doctor said, smiling. “He’s a tiny thing.”

“An omega?” Avery’s tears came harder. “We have an omega.”
