The party seemed to continue in Avery’s room, though voices were lower and much more contained. After an hour or so, he noticed Avery faltering, lids closing. Wilder moved closer and slipped the babe from Avery’s clutches.

Avery came to, holding on. “No…”

“You need to sleep,” Wilder said.

“In a little while.”

“Let someone else hold him. We’ve got a room full of uncles who want to hold their nephew.”

“Fine,” Avery said, near pouting. “Here.”

Wilder carefully cradled the babe, much more confident after his time handling Rohan and Gray’s littlest one, who was happily nursing at the latter’s chest.

“Wilder?”

After placing the babe in Rohan’s expert arms, he turned toward Avery. “Yeah, babe?”

“You need to go buy all the newspapers downstairs. Every single one with today’s date.”

“Why?”

Avery’s eyes flitted open. “So Emory can someday read what was in the news on the day he was born.”

Wilder grinned. “That’s an interesting idea.”

Avery smiled.

“I can go,” Lake said.

“Why not come with me? I could use a chance to stretch my legs a little.” He’d seen the passing glances between him and Vaughn and didn’t like the idea of leaving the two of them alone without him in the room to chaperone.

Wilder led Lake out of the hospital room. “How’s it feel to be an uncle?”

“Not much different from being a cousin,” Lake answered.

“I suppose not,” Wilder replied with a grin.

“How’s it feel to be a dad?”

Wilder hit the button on the elevator and shrugged. “I don’t know how to put it into words. Anything I say can’t begin to describe it. Amazing? Incredible?” He sighed. “Glad my omega made it through okay?”

The elevator dinged, and the doors opened. Wilder glanced in and saw his papa.

Red-eyed and teary.

“Papa?”

Wynter’s gaze lifted.“What…what are you doing here?”

“Avery just gave birth…” He tilted his head, searching his papa’s haggard face. “That’s not why you’re here?”

Wynter shook his head. “Warden… is gone.”

“Gone?”

His papa stood a little straighter, wiping a tear away. “Warden Jaymes is dead.”

Wilder froze.
