Avery frowned and then urged him on when he struggled to find the words.

“What about the man?”

“He came late… after everyone else had departed. Except me, Vaughn, Papa, Rohan and Gray. He seemed to know Papa… and Papa was…angry.”

“Why was he angry?”

Wilder couldn’t say the words out loud. A knock came at the door, allowing him an escape. He walked to the door, opening it.

The stranger stood in the doorway.

“I’m sorry… I shouldn’t have, but I followed you here. I had to...” The man blinked, appearing as surprised as Wilder was.“Can we talk?”

Wilder searched the man’s face, really searched. A little part of him screamed “No!” but he had too many questions to say the word. “Come in.”

He shut the door, no idea why he’d let the man in, knowing there was no way he could’ve allowed the man to leave. “My omega and son are asleep in the family room, so we need to keep this conversation quiet.”

“Of course.”

“Whoare you?”

“I knew your papa. A long, long time ago.”

“Who are you… to him?”

“Wilder? Is someone here?” Avery called out.

The man’s eyes widened. His gaze flicked to Wilder. “Your name is…Wilder?”

“It is.” He turned slightly, confused. “Coming, my love.” He eyed the stranger. “You should come in. Meet my omega.”

What the hell am I doing? Am I nuts?

He walked back to the family room, the stranger trailing him. Wilder met Avery’s gaze as soon as he entered the room. “We have a guest.” He turned to the stranger. “I’m sorry… I didn't catch your name.”

“Wilder. Wilder Cavanaugh.”

Wilder’s stomach moved to his throat. He glanced at Avery, whose eyes were wide as saucers. “Can I get you a drink, Wil—Mr. Cavanaugh?”

“I drink little these days, but I believe I need one today.”

That makes two of us.Wilder strode to the small bar and poured two whiskeys. He crossed the room and handed one over. “There you go.”

“Thank you.” His hand shook slightly, the alcohol sloshing a bit in the glass. “Mind… mind if I take a seat?”

Wilder Cavanaugh didn’t wait for an answer. He all but collapsed into a nearby chair and downed the liquor in one gulp. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. “I didn’t know. About you. Just so you're aware.”

“What are you talking about?” Wilder asked, knowing the answer already. It was written clearly on Cavanaugh’s face.

“I had no idea I had a son.”

“My father died today,” Wilder said without emotion.

“The man who raised you. Clearly not the man who made you.” Cavanaugh shook his head. “It’s like looking in a mirror. Minus thirty years, of course.”

Wilder took a seat on the chaise at Avery’s feet. He stared at Wilder Cavanaugh.“Who are you?”

“Your papa’s true alpha.” Cavanaugh frowned. “And from what I see before me, likely your father.”
