“Someday, you’ll find your omega and understand better, too,” Rohan said.

Wilder’s mind immediately went to Abe, and he frowned at that trajectory. “I doubt that’ll happen soon. I have no plans to attend one of the omega balls in the nearordistant future.”

Rohan smiled, an odd knowing look on his face. “Who knows? Maybe your omega will just fall into your lap one day.”

Wilder eyed his friend. “Meaning?”

“Nothing,” Rohan said. “Back to Abraham and this position. I really think this is a good fit. He’s qualified, and you already know him. One word from you is all it takes.”

“Why do you push so hard? I mean—if he’s as capable as you say, he’d likely get snapped up by any number of businesses.”

“Why do you pushbackso hard?” Rohan asked.

Wilder didn’t answer. Finally Rohan sighed. “My husband. He worries over these boys and thinks me being in the building might offer some kind of protection.”

“Just what does Abraham need protection from?” Wilder asked, the fine hairs on the back of his neck rising. Instinct roared in his blood, the need to safeguard what was his.

Mine? Hardly.

Rohan’s expression went blank, his eyes wide.

What was it? What was it about this beta that had Wilder’s instinct roaring and needed Rohan’s protection? There was something there, something Rohan refused to voice.

“Why?”Wilder demanded.

Rohan opened his mouth, but didn’t speak for a moment. He squirmed in his chair, leaning forward, resting his elbows on the desk. “Gray worries over his brother’s boys… and wanted me close to watch over Abraham.”

“Watch over him? He doesn’t seem to need a fairy goduncle.”

“The boys are orphans, and Gray feels responsible for them. He worries… and the more I can alleviate those worries, the less stressed we both will be.” Rohan frowned. “You’ve seen how tired he looks.”

“You both are very blessed in the baby-making department. That can’t be easy on him.”

“We hadno intentionof having more children so soon,” Rohan said. “Jasyn was an accident. A happy one, of course, but we hadn’t planned for him. Now we have a fourth child, also unplanned. Life happened. And now it’s wearing him down.” The alpha sat back, looking lost. “I fear for his health.” He paused a second, drawing in a low breath. “I can’t lose Gray…too.”

A few seconds of silence hung between them, and Wilder could feel Rohan’s pain suffocating him.

“Perhaps you can work from home a day or two a week—like you did—”when Jamie was ill.Wilder hesitated, unable to say those words. He didn’t want to remember the bad. “Like you did before. It seemed to work out well enough.”

“I might do that,” Rohan said. “At least until the babe’s born and we can relax some.”

Wilder chuckled. “I thought a new baby in the house wouldn’t signal relaxation.”

“It does when it means I know my omega is safe and well.”

Wilder shook his head. “See…thisis why I avoid the balls at all costs. I don’t need the added pressure of an omega in my life. Especially now.”

Rohan eyed him oddly. “Don’t count on things going the way you expect them. Life likes to send curveballs.”

Wilder eyed his friend, imagining himself avoiding curveball after curveball with ease.

“I can’t expect Wynter and Warden Jaymes would be happy with no grandchildren springing from your loins.”

Wilder chuckled at that. “No, my parents have been nagging me for years as it is. Particularly Papa.”

“You’ve always been Wynter’s favorite,” Rohan murmured. “Of course he wants to see you breed lots of little ones he can spoil rotten.”

“Favorite? My parents don’t have favorites.”
