“Hey, what’re you doing?”

“I’ll give it back to you tomorrow.Clean,”Avery murmured, eyeing him and praying Brett didn’t ask questions.

Brett frowned, but remained silent. Avery waited until nearly everyone had turned in their exams before getting into line to drop his off. Once he did, he rushed out, ignoring Brett and everyone else in class. He hurried to the bathroom and went into a stall to check himself.

The back of his pants had a huge wet spot.

Fuck.

Avery heard the door open and close.

“Abe? You in here?” Brett’s voice called out.

“Yeah,” he answered after a moment.

“You alright?”

“I’ll be fine,” Avery murmured, not sure if that was the truth.

“Anything I can help with?”

Avery wished he could tell Brett the truth. He wished he could open up and reveal who he was. Brett had been a good friend, and he hated not having someone he could confide in. Yet the fear of being found out was even stronger. “No. I’m good.”

“This have anything to do with that wet spot you left on your seat?”

Avery froze.

“There’s no one else in here, Abe. And it’s not like I haven’t guessed something was different about you before now.”

Avery struggled, wondering what he should say to that.

“Let’s get back to my room,” Brett murmured, standing near the stall door. “I can get you something dry to wear and help you get home.”

“I can’t ask you to be a part of this, Brett. You could get in trouble for helping me.”

“Trouble’s my middle name,” Brett cajoled cheerfully.“Remember?”

Avery chuckled, but the sound was grim. As was his mood. Fearfully, he rose and stood before the closed stall door, wondering what Brett would see when he opened it. Finally gathering the courage, he pulled the door inward and lifted his worried gaze to Brett.

The only thing he saw in Brett’s eyes was concern.

“Put the hoodie back on. I’ll walk behind you to my room and try to cover you the best I can.” Brett paused. “Unless you want me to go run and grab you some dry pants first? It shouldn’t take too long.”

A student came into the bathroom and eyed them oddly before heading to the row of urinals.

“No,” Avery whispered. “I need to get out of here.” He grabbed the hoodie and re-wrapped it around his hips before leaving the stall.

As promised, Brett followed closely behind him, acting as cover. The entire way across campus, Avery worried he’d get caught, but somehow, they made it into Brett’s room unnoticed. As soon as they were behind closed doors, he took off the hoodie and turned to Brett’s mirror.

Brett’sshatteredmirror. “What happened here?”

“Nothing,” Brett mumbled. “Just an accident.”

Avery turned to his best friend. “Anything you want to talk about?”

“I think we have bigger problems to deal with today. Maybe you can start with… what the hell are you doing? Or better yet…how?”

Avery wasn’t sure where to start. He did not know how much Brett had figured out on his own.
