“Does it…” He paused, shame filling him. But it wasn’t like he had anyone else to ask. The pharmacist who refilled it for him on the sly seldom said more than two words to him. “Do you know if it ever stops working?”

His professor’s face screwed up tightly. “Honestly, I know little about it other than the basics of what it does.” The professor’s eyes widened. “It’s not working anymore?”

“The past few months… it seems to be weakening.”

Conover frowned. “I have some people I can ask. It might take me a bit to get in touch with them safely. I’ve been pushing a bit too hard as of late, and I think I’ve got ears listening in on me.”

“Pushing?”

“Another time,” Conover said, waving him away.

“I would appreciate any information.”

Professor Conover nodded, looking around at the gray-tiled floor. “I hear you have two job opportunities before you?”

“A potential spot at Reece & White and more of a sure thing at Jaymes & Associates.”

Professor Conover leaned back against the tiled wall and seemed to consider his words a moment. “Which one do you want more?”

“Reece & White,” Avery admitted. “Even if it’s only an unpaid internship and no guarantee it would become a full-time position—it’s in forensic accounting, which is the direction I’d like to take.” He paused, considering recent events. “But I’ll likely take the position at Jaymes & Associates.”

“Why?” the professor asked.

“My uncle’s husband works there. My uncle worries about me being in the AQ without someone who knows my situation close by.”

“I can see his concern,” the alpha said.

“Especially withHeatexfailing. And then, if theScentexfollows behind it…” He’d be in a world of trouble.

“Would your uncle’s husband work directly by your side?” the professor asked.

“No. Same building, though.”

Professor Conover scratched his cheek, thoughtful looking. “If something truly went wrong, do you think he’d be able to save you?”

“I don’t know,” Avery answered truthfully. “But it’s better than nothing, isn’t it?”

Conover was quiet for a few seconds. “I realize we need to find a solution to your issue… and I can work on that. If it’s fixable… I would hate seeing you settle for less than what you want,” the professor said. “You have a sound mind. A good heart. The more you succeed in a world deemed not for you, the more you prove omegas capable.”

“Haven’t I already done that to some regard? I’m graduating third in my class—which, I will add, would’ve likely been higher had an issue not arisen during one of my final exams.”

His professor frowned. “What issue?”

Warmth filled Avery’s face. “I started… going into what felt like a heat. It was mild, but for years, I’ve had next to nothing. The medications worked perfectly for nearly years… and now… I don’t know.”

“We’ll get it fixed. I’ll make sure of it. I haven’t helped you this far to watch you flounder now.”

“You have my undying gratitude. I don’t know how I could ever repay you.”

“Seeing you cross that stage will be all the repayment I need.” The professor smiled. “I’ll call you when I have any news.”

“Okay,” Avery reached out, offered his professor a hand. “Thank you.”

Conover shook it firmly before Avery turned and exited the restroom.

Wilder sidled up beside Rohan and Gray’s growing family, wondering what the hell he was doing at the arena. It had sounded good on paper, but at that moment, he felt like an interloper. The three-year-olds helped improve that situation almost immediately. Silver held him in a death grip, those tiny little omega arms stronger than iron. Both Rohan and Gray held a babe in their arms, as well, while Auggie and Lake led the procession to their assigned spaces in the auditorium. They took their seats amid the vast crowd, Wilder the last to sit in the row.
