“I’ve abused you enough. I think I need to take some time off to spend with Lake. I should be the one to take care of him.”

Perhaps I should take the month off I need… have that detoxing heat. But could I take care of him while going through a full heat?Never having been completely off-meds, he wasn’t sure he’d be able to do both.

A knock came to the front door downstairs, halting his deliberations.

“Who the hell might that be?” Avery asked, before wandering downstairs.

Upon opening the door, he saw a mountain of…junk.A stuffed bear. Balloons. Flowers. A basket overloaded with only the gods knew what. Wilder’s driver held it all in his arms.

“What’s all this?”

“Mr. Jaymes said you were ill and wanted this delivered.” The driver walked in. He lowered one armful onto the coffee table before starting on the other. He stood straighter and gave Avery a searching look. “There are a couple of bowls of chicken soup. Crackers. Some other light fare, as well as some upset stomach meds and such.” The driver handed the flowers to Avery. “Might want to get those in some water.”

“What’s going on?” Gray asked, arriving behind Avery.

“A get-well delivery from Mr. Jaymes.” The driver tugged at the brim of his hat. “I best be getting back to drive him home from work.”

“Thank you,” Avery muttered before the door closed, embarrassed his uncle was there to witness the display. He stared at the myriad items, stunned that Wilder had sent them.

“Mr. Jaymes?”Gray asked, one brow rising.

“I got sick at lunch, and he had to send me home in his car.”

“You were at lunch?Withhim?” Gray asked, both brows going up.

“He said he had questions about the accounting department in relation to the embezzler. Should I tell the boss no?”

“And you got sick?”

“Mystomachwas upset.” He leaned in and fished out the soup. “This might be good for Lake tonight. I can strain out the bit of chicken and noodles and give him the broth.”

“Vaughn… or Wilder?”

“What does it matter?” Avery asked, walking with the soup into the kitchen. He placed it in the fridge, turning when finished to find his uncle staring at him. “What?”

“You keep making denials, but don’t think I don’t notice the way Wilder looks at you. Or the way you look at him. You need to be careful… or you need to give up these shenanigans and accept what’s to be.”

“It’s a harmless flirtation. That’s all.”

“Um-hmm. Sure.”

“He’snotmy alpha.” Guilt slammed into him over the lie. Biting the inside of his lip, he willed his uncle to let it go. “I can’t help that he’s hot. He is. So, sue me. I find the man attractive.”

Gray tilted his head a bit.“Umm-hmm.”

“Avery!” came a call from upstairs.

Saved by the scream.“I better go take care of my brother.”

“Avoid the conversation… but we both know this might end very, very badly.”

He marched up the stairs.

“If he’s truly not your alpha, you need to steer very, veryclear!” Gray yelled up the stairs.

“Sure,” Avery yelled back down.

“I’m gone. You two have fun.”
