They filledthe next days with hours of wild sex and brutal sleep. They didn’t leave the bed but to relieve themselves and the occasional bit of food or water—most of it brought to the bed by Wilder between rounds. As Avery had expected, even in full rut, Wilder had been protective and kind.

The perfect alpha.

Slowly, the innate need wore off, returning them to some façade of control. Sore and used, Avery’s body was weak. He’d barely eaten—though omegas ate little during a heat—and slept fitfully. Lethargy overtook him in the hours that came after.

Sometime later, Avery awoke to find himself alone in the bed they’d shared. A pain lanced his chest, his breathing tight. He searched the room, downcast to find himself abandoned.

I told him I refused to submit. Not fully. What did I expect?

Wilder soon appeared at the door, naked, with a tray in his hands. A smile came to his face. Avery couldn’t help but share the expression. He breathed a little sigh, relief loosening every limb.

“You’re awake.”

Avery attempted to hide another smile and failed. “I thought perhaps you’d left.”

Wilder padded barefoot to the bed, his naked body still dragging Avery’s attention. “Only long enough to scavenge for something in the kitchen. I didn’t find all that much left.”

“I assumed a rich guy like you had servants to do those kinds of things for him.”

“I do not… but perhaps I should after this. They would’ve come in handy the past few days.” He sat beside Avery and lowered his tray. The corners of his lips curled up. “You know… if it were… to happen again.”

“I’m rather happy we were alone, honestly,” Avery said, scanning the treats Wilder had discovered. Wilder lifted a nutrition bar to his lips, and Avery noted a couple of cans of cold water, a sliced apple, and a few cubes of cheese.

“You need more than that after what we’ve been through,” Avery mentioned.

Wilder finished chewing his bite. “Webothdo. I’m starving. I’ve already called for some pho for you and a big steak to be delivered for me, but thought you might want a little fruit while we wait.”

“I’ll just take the water for now,” Avery murmured, lifting one of the ice-cold cans. After resting the side of it against his forehead a moment, he opened it and drained nearly half.

“The takeout shouldn’t be long. Would you like me to draw you a bath while we wait?”

Avery sighed, his sore bones pleading for a hot bath. “Yes, please.”

Wilder leaned forward and pressed a kiss to Avery’s forehead. “My pleasure.” Before he rose, he snagged the bar and continued to munch as he crossed into his bathroom. Avery soon heard the water running as he leaned back in their messy sheets filled with their commingled scents.

A sense of calm overtook Avery as he leaned back against the headboard, even through the fatigue and the soreness. For so long, he’d run from the prospect of being with Wilder, yet there he was—sated and happier than he could recall ever feeling. Wilder had been as he appeared.

A good man.

Who turned out to be a kind lover.

Having never been through a full heat, Avery had almost feared it. No more. Perhaps he could take off the meds for the next heat—though the last few days might’ve been enough. He wasn’t sure. Yet, the prospect of another round of what they shared brought a smile to his lips and a tremor down his spine. He shouldn’t push his luck. He wasn’t sure if he’d gotten in over his head already.

Wilder emerged through the bathroom door and leaned on the frame, a soft grin to his lips. “What’s made you smile?”

Heat flushed Avery’s face. “The thought of this. Again.”

Wilder’s smile grew. “I’m happy to hear you want more of me.” The alpha tilted his head some. “I most definitely want more of you.” He straightened his head. “After you’re rested, of course. I know you’re sore.”

“I am. And I realize you meant later. At least, Ihopedyou did.”

Wilder nodded. “Later. I like the sound of that.” His smile faded some. “What happens tomorrow?”

Avery froze. The next day was Tuesday. A work day. They had already missed Monday. “I don’t know. What happens tomorrow, Wilder?”

“I suppose we go back to work and pretend this never happened?”
