I wiped at my eyes, the gesture proving ineffective when more tears escaped.

“Why are you telling me all of this?”

Calax grew silent. If his hand hadn’t tightened over mine, I would’ve assumed he hadn’t heard me. His jaw clenched.

“Because I want you to be happy, Addie. You deserve all the love and happiness in the world.”

“Including yours?” I didn’t know what possessed me to say that. But staring up at his handsome face, shadowed jawline and keen eyes, I found that I couldn’t regret it. There had been something brewing between Calax and me for a while now. I had never dared look at it too closely, but, just then, I wasn’t thinking clearly. I was consumed by an unbearable pain and the overpowering need to be loved and love someone back.

Calax’s face softened. The change was drastic on him, as if he suddenly became an entirely different person. His large hand cupped my cheek.

Was he going to kiss me?

Did I want him to?

Someone began to scream, and I wrenched my gaze in the direction it came from. I recognized the girl running into the room, eyes wide and fearful.

Shannon.

“Are you okay?” Asher asked, hurrying to meet her at the entrance. She let out a strangled sob.

“It’s...it’s Dave! There’s…He’s not…something’s happening to him. He’s not acting like himself. He’s...” Shannon leaned forward and vomited.

Black blood.

When she looked back up, her eyes no longer were the emerald green I remembered. As I watched, horrified, red began to eat away the original color as if her pupil was bleeding. Something black crawled beneath her pale skin.

“Shannon?” This came from Ryder as he hesitantly stepped up behind Asher. Shannon cocked her head to the side as she considered him.

“Now you pay attention to me?” she asked in a hoarse voice. Before Ryder could respond, Shannon pounced on him.
