“What’s going on?” I signed. Somebody behind me must’ve said something, no doubt along the lines of what I just said, for Sarge’s eyes flickered in that direction.

“There’s nobody in there. No employees. No guests that I could see. We’re probably going to have to break into rooms tonight.”

Normally, those words would instill fear and something akin to excitement in my heart. We weren’t criminals, but with our jobs, we had to do some pretty shady shit. What was the world coming to that those words now sounded normal? Would we ever go back to the way things were?

We parked in the back parking lot, away from the street and any wandering eyes. Sarge’s recollection of the old man’s warning was worrisome. Was he trying to threaten us?

Unfortunately, we were left with more questions than answers.

Ryder made quick work on the locks (with modern technology upgrading from actual keys to key cards, breaking into a hotel was nothing like in the movies). We would separate ourselves into two bedrooms, the bigger of which would contain Adelaide. Despite the fact that those in her room would have to cozy up on the opposite bed or sleep on the floor, every person volunteered. Even that annoying fuck, Tommy, though he assured us it was only to make sure we kept our “wandering, perverted man-hands off of her”. I couldn’t decide if his fascination with her was hero worship, some morbid type of love, or something else entirely. It didn’t bother me - he was way too young for her - but it did make me feel slightly bad for the little bugger. He would not take it well when we ultimately parted ways.

After a brief discussion, it was decided that Tamson, Ryder, Asher, and Tommy would sleep in one room. The rest of us would sleep in the bigger room with Adelaide. None of those guys seemed happy with the arrangement, and I noticed a particularly fierce scowl on Ryder’s face. What was his deal?

I couldn’t help the smug smile on my own face as I stepped into the modest bedroom with two, queen-sized beds. I would happily sleep on the floor if it meant I could stay with Addie.

I had learned long ago about the monsters in the world. Those monsters were, unfortunately, growing and expanding. Evolving, almost, into entirely new beings. I hadn’t been able to protect her then, but I’ll be damned if I let anything happen to her now.

No monsters would get to her as long as I was breathing.
