A gunshot shook me out of my thoughts.

I immediately began running towards where I had left the guys. I didn’t know if Ryder had already joined them or if he was still in the bathroom. I hadn’t even been certain that the gunshot came from one of the guys, yet...

I knew.

My feet slowed of their own accord when I spotted Asher with his gun still raised. He had it pointed at a small creature, and for a horrible, nauseating second, I thought it was Mof.

I let out an audible sigh of relief when I spotted my cat curled in Fallon’s arms.

No, the creature that had been shot down was a squirrel.

“Don’t get too close,” Tam warned me as he saw me sneaking towards the fallen animal. But I didn’t have to get closer to see the squirrel. Even from a distance, I could see its wide eyes staring blindly ahead. Blood red. Familiar white foam, almost like whip cream, came out of its mouth.

I realized then that what I had seen previously with the dog hadn’t been a fluke. The disease was, apparently, transferring itself to animals as well as humans. If I didn’t think we were screwed before, I definitely had a change of heart.

For a brief moment, I wondered if it was worth going to Atlanta. I knew, without a shred of doubt, that I still had to go, but the others?

My brother wasn’t their responsibility. Hell, I wasn’t even their responsibility despite their claims otherwise.

I had to talk to them. I had to make them see reason. This was my journey, and I wouldn’t let them come with me.

Nobody else would get hurt if I had my say in it.
