“I’m fine!” Ronan protested to Sarge, mitigating the damages. He had always been a baby when it came to pain. Even with something as simple as a scratch, he would act like his entire leg had been amputated. I could tell he was trying to play it cool now - trying to impress Addie no doubt - but a low hiss escaped his clenched teeth. Addie, hearing the sound, tightened her hand over his.

“When I was at the hotel, before I came to you guys, I saw a dog. He had red eyes and was practically foaming at the mouth,” Addie said softly. Her eyes were wide, lost in a memory that only she could see. “So you think the virus is spreading to animals?”

Sarge’s face was hard. I could tell he was pissed that she hadn’t bothered to share that information earlier.

Indignation on Addie’s behalf reared its head, but I smothered down my protective instincts. Addie didn’t need me running off my mouth to defend her honor.

No, my girl was strong all on her own.

“I hadn’t thought anything of it,” Addie said, voice cold. “I would’ve told you if I thought it was important.”

It became a contest of wills. Sarge stared down at her, trying to intimidate her, and Addie stared defiantly back at him. My mind transferred back to when I had first realized the extent of my feelings for her.

She had stood up to me that time too. Without fear; without shame.

It was Sarge who looked away first, a fact that nearly had me stagger over my own two feet. Never had he allowed another to display their dominance over him. He always had to be the alpha.

For Addie, he was willing to submit.

He muttered something under his breath, his version of an apology, before strolling back towards the van.

I exchanged bemused glances with the other guys, and I could tell we were all thinking the same thing.

We didn’t bother to question his strange behavior, mainly because that made us hypocrites. This girl was making us all crazy.
