“I loved you from the second I saw you,” he said wistfully. He smiled down at me, and I rolled my eyes up at him. We were currently leaning against a stack of pillows, my head on his chest and his fingers absently tracing an invisible pattern on my bare arm.

“No you didn’t,” I scoffed.

“You don’t believe in love at first sight?”

“Of course not. It’s infatuation and lust, not love.”

Calax smirked. “What about Romeo and Juliet? I’m pretty sure that they were a love-at-first-sight type of couple.”

“And look how well they turned out.”

Calax was silent for a moment, absorbing my words. Finally, he nodded slowly.

“You’re right. I think the first time I realized I loved you was when you stood up to me. I was a whole foot taller than you, and you still made me cower in terror.”

I smiled at first at the memory, but that smile immediately morphed into a frown.

“You never did tell me why you destroyed my garden in the first place.”

I felt him stiffen underneath me, his hand stilling on my skin.

“I never told you?” he asked in disbelief. My frown deepened.

“Never told me what?”

“I didn’t destroy your garden. That girl, Emerald, did.”

I considered his answer.

“Well, why did you let me yell at you?” I asked, embarrassed. I turned my face, so my flaming cheeks were hidden by his chest. “Why didn’t you just tell me the truth? Why did you fix it for me?”

His hand resumed its gentle caress.

“I already told you. I did it because I loved you.”

And damn it if my heart didn’t grow even more. I loved this man. I loved this man with my entire being.

“Diamond,” I said at last.

“Huh?”

“The girl’s name was Diamond, not Emerald.”

He chuckled, the sound reverberating through my body. It was the most glorious form of music. His lips moved to my ear, and I felt his teeth nibble on the sensitive lobe. I shivered in delight.

“I don’t like redheads,” he told me.

“She had black hair.”

“She did?” He sounded honestly confused, and I smiled against his chest.

“How do you not remember the girl you used to date? Are we that forgettable to you?” Though I tried to sound teasing, my voice betrayed my hidden insecurities. How long would it be before Calax tired of me? Before he decided that I was too damaged to deserve his love? He had a new girl every day. What made me so special?

Seeming to pick up on my fears, his arms tightened around me. His lips parted on the top of my head.

“She’sthat forgettable to me. You? You’re everything.”

Before I could answer, the lights flickered once before completely plunging the house into darkness.
