I began to blush. I hoped she wasn’t able to see my flaming face in the darkness. My fingers twitched against my thigh, and my eyes automatically wandered to the bricks surrounding the windowsill. It was all I could see in the darkness.

One brick.

Two bricks.

Three bricks.

“Don’t be such a pussy,” Lacey sneered, grabbing my chin roughly to turn my face back towards her. I felt the familiar claws of panic begin to take hold. I had to - I needed to - finish counting the bricks. “She would never look twice at you. You’re a fucking freak. You’re good for nothing but a quick fuck. It’s the only thing you’re good at.”

Her free hand trailed up her stomach, towards her breast, and she pinched her nipple.

Yet, all I could see were the bricks out of my peripheral vision.

One brick.

Two bricks.

Three bricks.

Four bricks.

“You’re such a fucking cunt,” Lacey sneered. Her hand still fondled her own breasts as if she thought that might turn me on. Before, it probably would’ve. It was only recently that I had begun to notice someone’s true beauty.

And I knew she was right. Addie would never feel the way for me that I felt for her, and I would never get in the way of Calax’s happiness. He had loved her longer than I had.

But I knew what I wanted now. I knew my standards - I knew that I wanted somebody like her in my life. Not a quick fuck. Not a string of girls every night.

From downstairs, somebody began to shout, the noise startling enough for Lacey to drop her persistent, wandering fingers from my chin.

It wasn’t a scream, necessarily, but more so a battle cry.

With a blistering speed, I jumped out of bed, threw a shirt on, and headed down the stairs. Lacey followed behind me, still as naked as the day she was born.

I hoped Addie wouldn’t see her and assume the worst.

The doors around me opened, and the guys came hurrying out. The girls followed behind from their own rooms, their paces decidedly slower.

Lacey thrust her breasts out into Ronan’s face, the man closest to her, but he barely paid her any mind.

We entered the kitchen where Elena was standing, sopping wet. Her eyes were wild, flickering from face to face without sticking on any one person.

“Tell us what happened, Elena,” Fallon was saying. His arms were crossed, but he didn’t look concerned. It was apparent that she hadn’t said anything yet.

“I was heading to bed,” Elena said. “I saw Ryder and Addie talking in the living room.”

I exchanged a look with Asher. That wasn’t surprising, but from Elena’s petrified expression, that wasn’t all she saw.

I tampered down my jealousy at the thought of what they could’ve been doing besides talking. I had no right to be jealous.

Turning my attention towards the fridge, I decided to count the magnets. It calmed me.

“I headed to the bathroom for a second - the one near the kitchen.”

Again, I had no idea where she was going with this.

From the other boys’ irritated expressions, I concluded they felt the same.

Elena began to cry in earnest now.

“I followed the car as long as I could. I promise you. I got the license plate, but...I’m so sorry. I couldn’t stop them.”

“What the hell are you talking about?” Calax exploded, his already thin patience splintering. Elena looked up, sniffling, and met his gaze unflinchingly.

“I only saw the end. But it’s Addie and Ryder.”

“What about them?” Fallon asked, stiffening. Elena rubbed at her eyes once again.

“Somebody took them.”
