He cleared his throat uncomfortably.

“I don’t have my guitar or anything...”

“That’s okay.Just sing it.”

He closed his eyes, lashes feathering against his high cheekbones, and opened his mouth. I stilled as the familiar, raspy voice assaulted my senses.

“When I first saw you, I never wanted to look away. There’s so much I could’ve done, but I just wanted you to stay. You may be crazy, but I would love you just the same.”

The song continued, melancholic yet hopeful lyrics about the girl that had captured his heart.

About being trapped together, in a brand-new world, only for this girl to quickly become his world.

About her tendency to speak her thoughts which only made him fall for her harder.

About the adventures they have been in, and the adventures yet to come.

Tears sprang to my eyes as the meaning became clear. I wasn’t completely stupid, despite my admittedly air-headed moments.

Ryder loved me.

He looked at me over Liz’s shoulder. The air around us seemed to crackle with electricity, warming the stagnant air.

He loved me, and I loved him.

And I loved Calax.

I would have to deal with it, all of it, at a later point. Right then, I had to work on getting us out of there.

There was no other option.

We would escape, Liz would get help, and then I would focus on the “emotions” thing.

Yup, completely acceptable goals.
