I glanced through the rearview mirror, towards the road we had just traveled on, and I cursed when I noticed the tiny spikes protruding from the ground.

“Shit!”

I attempted to regain control of the car, but I knew that the effort was futile. I couldn’t determine how many tires were blown. One? Two?

Either way, we were screwed.

Just as I thought this, the back window exploded. That was the only word I could think to describe it. One second it was fine; the next, glass was shattering everywhere.

“Duck!” Ryder screamed. Using his good hand, he pressed my head down.

A gun rapidly began to fire, the bullets dinging the siding of the truck.

I screamed, wildly turning the wheel in a desperate attempt to escape. I tried to stare over the top of the dashboard, I tried to see where I was going, but fear kept my head between my legs.

The car lurched to a stop, the momentum making my head bang against the steering wheel.

I heard Ryder beside me, asking if I was okay, but my tongue felt like sandpaper in my mouth. My body was shaking.

Lifting my head, I noticed the car had slammed into the side of a brick building. Smoke emitted from the hood.

Besides for a trickle of blood on Ryder’s forehead, there seemed to be no new injuries that I could see.

That relief was only short-lived when I realized the predicament we had found ourselves in.

Shit.

We were alone, injured, with at least one shooter hunting us down. Was this the partner Liz had alluded to? Or were they another group of people like the ones we ran into before?

I didn’t know if my sanity could deal with anymore Kyles.

Ryder shook my arm gently, rousing me from my stupor. I turned towards him, wide-eyed, and saw my own panic reflected in his gaze. I couldn’t even begin to think of how we were going to get out of this situation.

Ryder’s hand reached for my own, squeezing tight.

All I could do was hold my breath and wait.

I heard the footsteps, heavy boots crushing debris and leaves, but I kept my eyes locked on the off-set brown bricks. I was trembling, my body unable to help its instinctive reaction when facing danger.

Ryder’s grip was iron around my hand. Still, I held on. That was all I could do.

“Addie?” a voice called in disbelief. A familiar voice.

Turning my head so fast I was afraid I would get whiplash, I met Fallon’s dark, incredulous eyes. I knew my own had filled with tears.

“Fallon?” I whispered.

“Sarge!” Ryder cried.

Before I could say another word, the door was flung open and I was in his arms. I sobbed into his chest, relishing in the comfort his strength gave me.

“We’ve been looking everywhere for you guys,” he whispered into my hair.

“Wait a minute...” I tried to take a step back from the tall man, eyes narrowed in accusation, but he kept his arms firmly around me. “You shot at us!”

Fallon blinked rapidly, as if coming out of a daze, before focusing fully on my face. He raised an eyebrow, the eloquent gesture worth a thousand words in Sarge-speak.

“Why the hell did you shoot at us?” I continued. My eyes automatically flew to the bulge in his pants. I knew it wasn’t just a happy-to-see-Adelaide type of bulge. Stupid bastard with his stupid bastard gun and his stupid bastard-
