Prologue

Istared at the place I had last seen him. I stared at the place where he had made his final stand, where he had gone out in a blaze of glory. He had always wanted to die like that: a hero.

I let out a scream of anguish, but the sound was lost in the cries. One cry couldn’t be distinguished from the thousands of others.

All I could do was stare. I had loved him, and he was lost to me. Love, I began to realize, was dangerous. It only brought unbearable pain, a pain that could not be put into words.

I wondered, as I stared at a splatter of blood darkening the carpeting, if my love had inevitably led to his death.
