Chapter 11

Ryder

Well…

Getting held at gunpoint wasn’t exactly how I planned to spend my day. No, I would’ve much preferred a repeat of today’s earlier performance. The whole, head-between-her-legs-as-she-moaned-my-name type of show.

Alas, the world was not so kind.

Instead of panicking as the barrel was pressed against the side of my head, I merely rolled my eyes and feigned indifference. Gun against my head? That was nothing.

So when the blond bitch wrapped rope around my wrists and tied me against the wall, I continued to keep my face impassive. Ronan let out a string of creative curses before his sounds were muffled by a sock being shoved into his mouth. His eyes widened in disgust and horror, and he flashed them a glare that would’ve made any sane person piss their pants. Me? I tried to calm my erratic breathing as my mind brought me back to Liz’s house.

My body, held captive beneath layers of ropes.

Her face contorted into a sneer.

Her cold lips…

I could feel the beginnings of a panic attack take root, but I quickly shoved them down. If there was one thing I learned at the Academy, it was never to show fear. Fear was a reflection of your weakness, and the last thing I wanted to be was weak in front of these people. My stomach was a tumultuous mix of fear and desperation. However, anger also warred for dominance within me, and I knew that only one person, one brown-haired female, would be able to get my rage pacified.

Three girls and three boys. All similar in age. The blond girl from earlier, two girls with dark hair, and three boys that could’ve been brothers. From what I garnered, the blond girl was named Ali. The brunette was Amanda. The oldest brother, and the apparent leader, was Kai.

“I’ll ask again,” Kai said, leaning down so he was face to face with me. “Where are you camped out?”

Oh yeah. The assholes decided that they wanted to raid our “camp”. They didn’t believe me when I told them we were visitors from the deepest pits of hell. To be fair, I wasn’t lying. Elena’s house was the equivalent to hell; only Liz’s house could compare.

The only good news was that they weren’t killers. They didn’t even want to hurt us. They were just six people playing the cards dealt to them by fate. The game was constantly changing, the rules fluctuating. One thing remained painstakingly clear: they wanted to survive.

“They’re both cute,” I heard Ali mumble, far enough away where she didn’t believe I could hear. She glanced at me out of the corner of her eye. Amanda scoffed.

“Too dark. Not my cup of tea.”

Figures. I was more of a coffee drinker myself.

The rope rubbed against my sensitive wrists, the pain increasing every second I was tied. My agitation must’ve been clear on my face, for Kai leaned down until his face was even closer to mine.

“Look,” he said. “You obviously came from somewhere that has food, water, and other resources. I don’t get why you won’t just tell us. We should all stick together against those beasts.”

Ronan, beside me, grunted, his words inarticulate due to the muffle. I couldn’t help but snort myself. What did this man expect? To tie us up and then join us around a campfire? His idea had merit, but his execution needed some work. Bondage was more of Fallon’s forte, if the rumors were true.

“Untie us,” I snapped. “Maybe we’ll talk after.”

“Look, it’s nothing personal man.” Another one of the men stepped forward, hands raised as if he was a criminal approaching a cop. He licked his lips and anxiously glanced at Kai the Dick Face. “We just had to protect ourselves before we talked to you. But we are sincere in our want to join you.”

This was getting fucking ridiculous. Addie was no doubt back by now and was getting worried. A worried Addie led to an insane Addie - or, at least, more insane than she normally was.

A crack of thunder reverberated overhead. I had seen the bloated storm clouds slowly inching their way to where we were. It would only be a few more moments before the sky opened up.

At a nod from Kai, the three girls pushed open the glass doors and waited outside, arms crossed over their chests.

“Stay with them,” Kai ordered his brothers, and they followed. I watched in rapt fascination as Kai the Dick Face produced a pocket knife from his pants. It suddenly occurred to me why he had sent them away in the first place. His hand trembled as he held the knife to my face, and in the blade I could see my reflection.

Well shit.

He brandished the weapon with a clumsy swipe that suggested he wasn’t familiar with how to properly wield it. Great. So I was going to bleed to death because some dumbass didn’t know how to hold a weapon. Fucking peachy. His hand trembled as he pressed it against my neck.

“Come on man. We have girls with us.” The words were a pathetic plea.
