Such a bastard.

“Really, Adelaide?” a cold voice asked, accompanied by a raised eyebrow. I folded my arms over my chest and glared at him as he walked through the archway. His hair was pulled back into a knot on the nape of his neck, a few strands escaping and curling around his ears.

“I’m pissed at you,” I retorted oh so wisely. To emphasize my point, I rubbed at my sore shoulder. He merely rolled his eyes at my dramatics before turning towards the rest of the group.

His team.

Fallon refused to sit, though that was no surprise. He always had to be the tallest, most imposing figure in the room. With his broad shoulders and penetrating eyes, he most definitely succeeded.

“Excuse me!” I said, before he could speak. I waved my hand in the air. Fallon pinched the bridge of his nose and closed his eyes.

“You don’t need to raise your fucking hand sweetheart,” he muttered. “We all know you’re just going to talk anyway.”

I frowned.

He may be right, but still. Dick.

His smile grew, hinting that I may have spoken that insult aloud. Again.

“I have a few topics I would like to bring to the committee’s attention today,” I said seriously. Ronan coughed to cover up his laugh. “The first one is concerning Atlanta. I don’t believe that everyone should go with me. I vote that I travel by myself.”

I should have really considered a career in politics. I was a damn good diplomat.

Before anyone could protest, I held up a hand. “Calax can come with me, for obvious reasons. And Ryder can come to...sing me to sleep. Not any other reason.” I knew that it would be wistful thinking on my part to believe that they’ll let me go alone. Damn them. At least I nailed the whole subtlety thing concerning Ryder. The assholes would never suspect we were dating. Singing a person to sleep was a completely valid reason for coming with them on a dangerous journey across the country. Right?

“And Ronan will probably want to go because his brother is going, so I guess he can come too.” I paused, considering my words thoughtfully. “Fallon is probably going to want to go, but I doubt Fallon would leave the rest of them behind. Declan, of course, is welcome to come. Tamson can come too; his ninja skills would come in handy. If they all come, I’m going to need Asher to calm myself down. Heaven forbid that I’m stuck with all of these assholes without Asher. So yeah. Only those people can go.”

I blinked innocently, glancing from one face to the next. Fallon raised a dark eyebrow at me.

“Kitten,” Ryder said softly. “You literally just invited everyone.”

“No, I didn’t!” I protested, but my mind immediately replayed my monologue.

Damn it. That was a fail.

Fallon, still looking too damn amused, clapped his hands together.

“Now that Adelaide has given us all permission to join her, shall we move on?”

“I didn’t mean to do that.” I crossed my arms over my chest with a huff. Sometimes I wondered if it would be best if I glued my mouth shut. I had a serious case of word vomit.

The whole goal of my spiel was to convince the boysnotto follow me. Obviously, I had not succeeded. I really sucked at the whole people thing, despite my repeated attempts at practice.

“The second thing I would like to address is your team and school. I’m not stupid. I know it’s more than a normal boarding school. I want answers, and I want them now. I can’t keep living in the dark. I mean, I’m a ride or die type of person, but I want to know where we’re going and why we have to die.” I leveled each of them with my best glare. The guys exchanged rapid glances with one another before Fallon released a heavy sigh. His thick lips were pursed as he considered me.

“You’re right,” he admitted at last. “You deserve to know everything.”

Calax’s hand tightened over mine, and Ryder turned to stare at me pleadingly, begging me to understand what I was going to hear. I had the distinct feeling that these answers - these answers I wanted so desperately they were almost a physical ache - were going to change my life.

“We should probably start at the beginning,” Fallon said.

“The beginning?”

“There was a reason we were at the resort to begin with.”

“Which was?” I was beginning to become irritated. Fallon had a tendency to give me vague answers. The more he talked, the dizzier I became. Crossing my arms over my chest, I waited for him to collect his thoughts.

“For your parents,” he admitted after an excruciatingly long moment of silence. I shifted. Whatever I had expected him to say, it wasn’t that. What did my parents have to do with a boarding school?
