“You’re the only thing in this world thatdoesn’tmake me uncomfortable.”

“I’m a thing?” I blurted, realizing that my big mouth had ruined our romantic moment. Fuck me.

Actually, that was a pretty good idea. I was sure we could use the vines for some ropes…

Before I could make that suggestion, Tamson disappeared like a cloud of smoke.

Soft lips pressed to the side of my head, and I turned towards Declan expectantly. Only, it wasn’t Declan, at least not the one I remembered. Instead, it was a young boy with abnormally long hair and eyes that seemed to stare into my soul. One quick glance down confirmed I was wearing a white dress with my hair in pigtails. Ducky’s face changed once more, features hardening and elongating. His hands moved to sign, and I focused on his fingers in rapt attention.

I. Love. You.

Heart swelling, I repeated the motions back to him. I had just crossed my arms over my chest for love when he too disappeared.

My heart ratcheted up a notch when I realized I was all alone.

Clouds, dark gray and bloated, submerged the sun until everything was encased in darkness. The flowers began to wilt in their own bug-riddled refuse. The gazebo shattered, and I barely dodged the collapse, landing on my butt in the weedy grass.

My paradise, my mind, was falling apart.

As if to further emphasize that point, the clouds opened up and released a torrent of brutal rain. It stung everywhere it hit, the coldness so intense it could’ve been molten lava.

“No!” I screamed, spinning in a wide circle. I searched the darkness for my men, for Tommy, for Nikolai. But I was alone.

All alone.

“No!”
