Turning, I glanced back. Sure enough, Viv had plastered herself against the man she’d been flirting with, her tongue practically shoved down his throat as his hands roved over her. Ugh. Yup. That was my friend alright.

“So, what are your plans since you’ve been replaced?” Ian asked, leaning closer until I could feel his muscled chest brushing against me. “Because we’re free, and a beautiful girl like you shouldn’t have to be alone. So tell me, Mare, would you be up for some company tonight?”

My breath hitched, my core sparking at his husky tone, and before I realized what I was saying, my response came tumbling out. “Yes, please.”

A soft ringingpulled me from my thoughts, my focus shifting back to the bedroom I was laying in. Shoving off the bed, I followed the sound. It wasn’t hard to find my piece of shit phone laying out on top of a dresser next to the bed, so I snatched it up and answered as soon as I saw the familiar number on the caller ID.

“Hello?” I greeted, sinking onto the bed as I waited for Donny to respond.

“Hey, Mary.” Even over the phone, his voice gave me the chills. A shiver of disgust worked its way down my back even though he wasn’t even here to eye-fuck me. “I know you were looking for more hours, and it looks like we’ll need an extra hand a bit earlier than your scheduled shift if you’d like to take it.”

“Yes,” I jumped at the opportunity, coughing slightly to calm the wave of hope that filled me. “I would love to. What time will you need me in?”

Donny rattled off the info, chattering way longer than necessary before finally hanging up. My hand dropped to my lap. The dead weight of worry slowly eased off of my chest and for the first time in a long time, I felt like I could breathe again. A minuscule grin lifted my lips. I might be able to keep my place after all.
