“Yes.”

His temperature rises. “At the Crawdad?”

“Not exactly.”

“What does that mean?”

“I was walking to my car, and a guy tried mugging me.”

His nostrils flare. “Someone tried mugging you?”

“Yes, he tried. But he didn’t count on my self-defense training or the three summers spent sparring with local boys in my uncle’s gym.”

“Are you okay?”

“I’m better than he is.”

Ares’ big hands curl into fists, and his breath leaves him with a ragged, harsh growl. “Where is he?”

“Changing his underwear. Put your hammer down, Thor, I took care of it.”

The muscle in his jaw ticks. “He will pay for putting his hands on you.”

“He already has?”

“What do you mean?”

“His face got up close and personal with the pavement.”

“How?”

“I introduced them. Face meet concrete. The concrete won.”

He looks surprised. “You did that?”

“Your tone implies I’m not capable of doing such a thing. Is that because I’m a woman?”

“It’s because you’re tiny.”

“To you, everyone is tiny.”

“You especially.”

“I’m strong… I’m also slightly offended.”

His temper eases. “I’ve seen you try to change a tire.”

“That was different. Maybe I was trying to get your attention.”

He raises an eyebrow. “Were you?”

I reach for his waistband, and my fingers walk across his warm ab muscles, making him flinch. “Did it work?”

He yanks me closer. “Oh, it worked.”

“Then what does it matter?”

He gazes down at me. “I don’t know if I should be scared or turned on.”
