“Both of you put your heads on straight.” This time Jack did bark. “Beatrice. Your heat is near. You are overreacting because of that. Benedict. Settle. I’ll not have you snap at my mate when she is in such a vulnerable state.”

The question of why they didn't speak of love and devotion nearly escaped my lips. But it did cause bile to rise in my throat. I could not accuse Jack of having played with my affections, as my mother had intimated once. That I knew was a lie. Jack would never play with my emotions. Lord Paxton, though? Despite how passionate my omega was about his alpha, I hardly knew him. I hardly understood him beyond that he wanted to possess me and Jack. Was Jack so under his spell that he went along with this? Perhaps not knowing I was just a conquest for the cold silver alpha?

“I cannot stand the sight of you,” I sobbed. They watched me. Watched me. Made no move to comfort me. Where were their purrs now? Or their soft words and praise? Even the sharp sting of their hands spanking my bare bottom would have been welcome because it would have been something.

“Oh Goddess,” I gasped for a breath but couldn’t find it. I tried again but no. Each desperate attempt to draw air into my lungs, thwarted, because they had seized. “Oh—“

Jack reached for me. I tried to look at him but the tears came too fast. Everything was a blur of pain.

“Leave me alone!” I sobbed. “I want to be alone…”

“You don’t. Stay with us,” Pax barked.

“Omega,” Jack growled. “We need to talk. You are overwrought.”

“No. I want something sweet. I want tea. I want my nest.”

Jack deflated. “Very well. Go to your nest, Trix.”

I sniffed. My nest. Yes. I wanted my nest. “You’ll not follow me?”

The silver alpha opened his mouth to speak, but Jack forestalled him with a shake of his head. “Go to your nest, Trix.”

Why aren’t you coming?I wanted to scream. Why are you letting me leave?

But they stayed where they were, watching as I grabbed a shirt and pulled it over my head. By the scent I knew it was Jack’s… My mate… Oh Goddess, why did my heart ache so much? Why did I… I shook my head.

“Go,” Jack ordered, just a hint of bark compelling me to move away. “Rest in your nest.”

“This isn’t over.” Pax was unable to restrain himself and lurched forward. He wrapped his hand around my throat. “This isn’t over, Vixen. You’ll need to answer…”

I wrenched myself away. Stumbled. Caught myself on a chair. Struggled with the door and burst into the cool hall.

I ran as though pursued by hellhounds, Jack’s shirt hanging loose around my body. Underneath I felt the cold marble on the soles of my feet.

Cold marble. I came to a stop. “Oh Goddess… My feet. You are a fool!”

Suddenly I was thrown back a full year to the first time I’d met Lord Benedict Paxton at the Royal Academy.

I was going into heat. No wonder I’d been so… So irrational about learning my alphas had had lovers… And Goddess, the things I’d said. I glanced over my shoulder. Did they know? Oh, Goddess. Would they forgive me if I begged?

“Beatrice?”

I looked up to see my sister standing in front of me.

“Well! This is rather exciting isn’t it? I knew you and those two reprobates would work things out. Not on my dining room table, of course. I fear I will never be able to host a dinner party again… Perhaps I can remove those leaves? Anyway. Where are you going? Are… Are you playing a game? Are they chasing you? I’ve been dying for this child to be born because how lovely would it be to run around and have your alpha stalk you. Syon is so much harder to provoke. So even tempered! But that is what I love about him. My—“

“I need to go,” I told her.

“Why, Bea? Is it… Is it because of what I did? Don’t go back to London! Please. I just want you—“

“No… No, Vi. My heat will begin soon and I need to build a nest. I need to beg for their forgiveness. The things I said. Why must my heat make me lose all reason? Are you like this… I’m rambling. You think they will forgive me?”

“Why?” She sounded distressed. “Why? They clearly need you more than life. They’d go to the ends of the world to be near you. I’ve never seen them so relaxed or happy. You were… You were on their knots!”

“Relaxed?” I asked. “Happy?”

“Yes.” She nodded firmly. A little frown creased her features and she rested a hand above the gentle swell of her womb. “I think they care for you. Of course they care for you. They love you.”
