Having no sense of self preservation, Beatrice moved forward, oblivious to the fact there was another alpha in the room. I growled and removed the sheet around my waist and swaddled her until only her flushed face and mussed hair could be seen.

“Hero? Gone?” She asked again, thankfully submitting to the prison of my arms.

“Yes,” Syon said, pitching his voice now that he wasn’t facing us. “With Stimpson, or so we assume. There was no letter, and we’d not have known if Mrs Markham hadn’t checked on her. Hero said she had a headache. It is a damned tangle is what it is. I’ve sent someone to see if a carriage was hired,” he growled. It was a insult for this to have happened under his nose. “Nearly lost my temper with the servants for— Not their fault. I’ve sent some betas who should catch up—”

“Who will get her back? Betas she does not know?” Beatrice snarled. At this point she decided to struggle to get free. A vicious kick caught me in the shin and I released her. There were other fights to be had, and I knew to pick my battle on this one thing. “Oh that I were an alpha! I’d not wait—”

“Careful what you say!” Syon barked.

My mate looked at me as if expecting me to jump in to defend her, but I could not fault Syon. He had already sent someone and now he had come to us. “He’s done everything right, Trix.”

Beatrice nodded, turned towards the wardrobe and began to pull out clothes. Shrugging into a shirt and tugging on breeches efficiently. This was not how an omega should behave after her heat. She should be collapsed in her nest, resting, allowing her alphas to care for her mate bite, allowing them to pamper her, feed her. What she should not be doing is preparing to ride off on some harebrained, dangerous scheme.

“No,” Jack barked. “What are you doing?”

She ignored him. One day I would discover the secret behind these Hartwell omegas, who seemed immune to an alpha bark. “I go after the girl who is as like a sister to me as those of my own flesh and blood.”

“Not this time, Bea,” Syon shook his head. “This is work for alphas. And I doubt your mates will appreciate your scheme. I’ve already locked Viola in her nest… Do you want the same?”

“They wouldn’t.”

The omega was mistaken.

Jack was like a Greek deity come to life, not just in form but in sheer power. The way he tossed the screaming and kicking omega over his shoulder and carried her back into the nest was a sight to behold. The Goddess must have stolen all my senses, but the sight made me consider whether there was time to fuck both of them before we left to bring Hero home. I followed them into the nest in time to see Jack tie her up using strips of the bedding in her nest. She’d not be able to wriggle out of those ties.

“We’ll be back before nightfall,” he purred to the spitting mad omega. “Try not to contemplate how you will murder us the entire time. I’ll ensure that there will be enough food for you… Lots of sweets for the sweetest omega. We are committed to rescuing your friend and won’t return until she is safe. Stimpson won’t survive this escapade unscathed. You have my word. Our word.”

She opened her mouth but quieted when I raised my hand.

“Enough. You shall stay.Youralphas,” I emphasised the words. “We shall handle this.”

“If I was an alpha! She is my—“

“We are your mates,” Jack cupped her face in his hands.

“Mate? In my nest perhaps, but where and when it counts I cannot trust—“

“Consider before offering words you don’t mean,” I warned her. Jack’s too still presence at her side had me watching him, considering him more than her in this moment. I knew she did not mean to accuse him of anything. Goddess, I felt I knew her more than him at times, that I could read her thoughts, but his insecurities were so close to the surface. A heat in her arms would not wash away years of guilt.

My mate paled. “I’m sorry…” she blinked away tears. “The heat. My emotions. Oh… I didn’t… I am so used to doing for myself. None have… you will, though. Won’t you? I feel so stupid. Bring her back, Jack. Pax? Bring her back please? Safe.”

“I love you. Never doubt I have or would do anything without considering you first,” Jack whispered the words, but I heard them clear as a bell. More of that rightness filled me. They could say those words to each other. With the Goddess’ grace, I would have them bound so close to through the laws ancient and modern, they would never escape. He kissed her forehead and began to untie her. “I’m going to trust you to stay safe whilst we’re gone. Unless this house is burning to the ground, you stay.”

She nodded. “I’ll stay.”

I knew she meant it. The way her scent changed, no longer bitter and anxious but calm. Was this what it meant to be a mate? To be so carefully attuned to the subtle shifts in her scent?

“We’ll be back and knot you until you’re too exhausted to move.” He promised.

Her eyes narrowed. “You’ll never exhaust me. I’ve better stamina than you. Omegas—“

“I shall stop your little mouth.” Jack kissed her. “Be grateful it is a kiss and not my cock shoved deep into your throat. Do you understand?”

“Fuck,” I hissed.

“I’ll be good,” she promised. “But when you return, I can’t make promises…”

“Good girl.” He gave her another swift kiss before straightening and leaving the room. I followed, walking to my own room to pull clean clothes on.
