BEATRICE

Consciousness returned slowly.

Blinking awake, the first thing I saw was Jack’s face hovering above mine, kissing Pax. My mates kissing—wild and beautiful in their passion. Their scents were just the same. A soft moan, not of pain this time, slipped free. I needed this: them close enough that we three touched. I didn’t have time to worry about the injury when I needed to be near my mates.

“Please…”

“Trix?” Jack broke free, lips thick and bruised. His eyes, Pax’s too, were mirrored gold, signalling that they were in rut. “Are…”

Their relief was a palpable thing. And whatever they’d been doing became unimportant as their entire focus shifted. I reached up and traced my fingers over Jack’s lips. He caught my hand and pressed a kiss to my knuckles.

“Don’t scare me like that ever again,” he said against my skin.

“She is fine. The fever broke. She’s not going anywhere.” Pax assured our mercurial alpha. He kissed Jack’s shoulders.

“How long?” I asked.

“It has been three days since you were shot.” Jack told me, his eyes coasting along my face. “You had a fever, and the doctor said if we licked your wound it would help it heal.”

“Which is what we will do now. On your side, Trix,” Pax ordered. “Let us get to your wound…”

Large, gentle hands turned me over, exposed my wound. Instinct said to roll away, protect the injury, but my alphas growled, commanded me to lie still. Then their mouths were on me, licking at the wound.

I watched the top of their heads—black and silver—and a small smile tugged on my lips. Then I saw them. Bites.

“What?” The word full of wonder and incomprehension. “You bit him? You bit him?” I asked each mate in turn.

“Pax was being possessive,” Jack chuckled. I gloried in his pure happiness. We’d been through so much, and he could still find a way to tease Pax, whose body grew rigid behind me. “Oh, he is glaring now, but he practically begged me. And when I didn’t, he bit me first—”

“You don’t always follow orders? You could say the sky was yellow and the trees purple, and I’d find that easier to believe.” I arched my neck to nuzzle against Pax.

“He did eventually.”

“Naturally.” Jack smirked at us.

“Naturally,” Pax confirmed.

“You say that a lot. ‘Naturally,’ I mean. Is there a reason?” I liked our lazy conversation, each passing topic granting me more insight into the two men who were my alphas, my mates.

“We—” Jack scratched his chin, still covered with a short beard that gave him a rough, primal look, which made me squirm to think how it would feel to have his face between my thighs. “We say it when one of us has made a blatantly true statement.”

“Like you are angry, I put myself in danger?” I ventured.

“Naturally,” Jack said at once.

“Naturally,” I smiled, feeling closer to them than ever before.

“She fits us better than a glove.”

I opened my mouth to make some comment about a part of my body that would like to act as a kind of glove, but I stopped when a thought struck me.

“Do you think they will stay?”

“We don’t know. There is no mating gland, but one can scar from any wound,” Pax said as he stroked my side, his fingers skirting around my injury, brushing along my breast. “I hope they scar, but appreciate if they won’t.”

“What if I bite you?” I asked them. Bite an alpha? I closed my eyes and imagined my small bite next to their larger ones. Goddess, slick gathered between my thighs. Who could have guessed I was so ruthlessly possessive that only a scar on their skin would soothe my omega. “I… Want that.”

“I told you she’d want to take her pound of flesh.”
