I crawled out of the nest and pulled a night-rail and dressing gown on before moving to the door. Viola fully dressed, her eyes bright with tears, and a smile on her face, allayed any nascent fears. “I—”

“You are looking well.” Vi blinked away a scattering of tears. “I was so worried.”

“Let’s talk.” I looked over my shoulder, waiting for at least one of the alphas to emerge. “Elsewhere.”

“Oh… Privacy! My sitting room. This way.”

I watched, amused, as Viola tiptoed us along the hall, and down the servants’ stairs to a small room behind a hidden door in the library. “It used to be Lord John’s private study. Syon gave it to me… I think he means to keep me here that I might not bother him with my constant questions.”

“Questions?”

“Oh.” She waved her hand in the air. “Things.”

She settled me on the small sofa by the window. “You look well… You have your colour back and… You are alive.”

“Did you truly think I might die?”

“I did not know what to think for they would not tell me.”

“Alphas.” We laughed. Goddess, it felt good to laugh. To breathe fresh air and not be overwhelmed by my two alphas.

“Mama is here,” she said when our laughter had died down. “She wants to see you.”

“Here?”

“I thought if we escaped here, then we could avoid having to deal with all the alphas until they hunt us down. Syon will hopefully not reveal our location…”

“I don’t—”

“Mama is a nightmare with the pacing and the worry she is doing. It is almost as bad as when she sent you to London… Sick with it.” Viola pressed her lips together and shook her head. “I hate to think how agitating it must be being their dynamic.”

“How exhausting it must be to have us as the omegas in their lives.”

“There is nothing wrong with us.”

“No… They think so. Menaces. Don’t think I’ve forgot what your mates have called us.”

“Sister…”

“What,” Viola whined. I closed my eyes. She’d been like this as a child.

“Nothing like that. Hero?” I prompted.

“She has stayed in her room.” Vi frowned at her hands. “She takes walks with a maid, but otherwise keeps silent. She wrote to her Mama and begged leave to stay here… We are happy to have her, but I worry she dwells too much.”

“It hasn’t been long.” I touched the back of my sister’s hand to draw her attention to me. “Let her grieve.”

“Vi!” Syon barked through the door, causing my sister to still. Her scent sparked but her lips compressed. Her eyes glanced at the door with a look of irritation. “Viola… I need you to handle your mother and your sister’s mates. My house—”

“He is not used to people spending extended periods of time with us…” Vi whispered.

“But he grew up in a pack.”

“Just because he grew up in a pack doesn’t mean he likes to be around lots of people.”

“VIOLA!” The door creaked on its hinges.

“Coming alpha!” Vi shouted back. She rolled her eyes and carefully stood waddled to the door, unlocking it and stepping back, allowing her husband to walk in.
