“Dance with other alphas?” I asked.

“You won’t be doing any dancing until you are healthy. And then Pax and I are capable of dancing with you. As much as you want.”

“And what if I don’t desire to dance with only you?”

“Then you will be disappointed,” Pax mumbled into my hair. “Why must we have all the important conversations when our time would be better spent sleeping?”

“I can’t sleep. I want to move around.”

“This is why one only ever has a single omega in a pack. Imagine if you had a pack of omegas all wanting something all the time. Exhausting.”

“You, Sir, are insulting.”

I gasped as Pax bit down on his still healing bite mark.

“Be gentle with her,” Jack snapped.

“Hmm,” my other mate began to suck and lick at his mark. I’d expected to find my body afire with desire, but this softer, intimate moment was a million times more bewildering. What to do with these two alphas?

“Very well, speak over breakfast.” I submitted, and we drifted off to sleep.

“I hate going out into society.” Pax informed us over breakfast. “And Jack don’t like it either. So, omega, we shall have to find some compromise. If you want balls, we shall go. On the condition we spend time in the nest. Same for every social engagement Jack and I might attend without you… We do have friends.”

“If I want to fence and shoot?”

“That can be arranged. Though I prefer that you do not use us for target practice.” Pax smirked, perhaps not understanding how serious I was.

“Trix, we do not seek to lock you up—admittedly would prefer that until Stimpson is caught. Your safety is the most important. Your safety.” My mate sighed. “I went too far. Allowed my fear to speak. Your bravery scares me.”

“And balls?” I asked. I did not know how to respond to his words. They scared me. The alpha before me was the same I’d known for so long. Almost violent in his need to protect me, almost mad with the understanding I could not be tamed. But now so much more open. As if my brush with Death had pierced through defences. Did they know? Could they see the change? I was too cowardly to ask, so held my peace for now. Turning the conversation to shallower waters.

“Do you enjoy dancing?” I asked, though my heart was heavy with questions and uncertainty.

“I’m a terrible dancer. For you I will try.”

“That is all I ask.”

Try. That is all any of us could promise at this point. I wiped my fingers and assessed my mates who’d launched into a discussion about some article in the newspaper which the publican had brought. Normally, I’d take an interest. I’d acted as hostess for my mother for four years—including this last year in Paris when she’d been the king’s ambassador, for Goddess’ sake! I’d been out in society for longer, and yet no matter, I wanted to ask them questions about the household, domestic arrangements. I rose from the table and gathered the dress I’d worn to our wedding. The memory of the event was hazy. Hardly worth remember, I tried to tell myself, since the final blessing would be held on the Autumnal Equinox. My omega, however, resented this gap and took her anger out on the dress, which smelled so very wrong.

“I’ll need a new wardrobe,” I announced.

“Naturally,” Pax grinned and turned back to Jack before I’d had a chance to respond.

“Naturally…” But it wasn’t the same when he couldn’t hear.
