I blinked. This was a different kind of alpha superiority, insidious and ugly.

“Meeker!”

The beta pushed in immediately. I knew it meant he’d been listening, but I’d never been more glad to see someone.

“Yes, my lady?”

“Please escort my mother out.”

“What are you doing?” The alpha snarled at Meeker, who’d gestured to her to leave.

“If you don’t want to create a scandal, you will go now, Mama. Never cross the threshold of this house again. I never want to see your face—”

“Now, m’lady,” Meeker said soothingly. “No need to get upset. She won’t be here in half a second if she knows what is good for her…”

How he menaced my mother into leaving, I don’t know or care. I sat on Pax’s chair, sinking into his scent.

“M’lady? Are you…”

“Did you hear?”

“Aye… Not all of it, mind. It was wrong to listen, but she ain’t one of us. Not your alpha, and it would be wrong for me to leave you without one of your people in case.” He sounded… protective. Almost gentle in his anger. “I’ll get you a glass of brandy. Just the thing when you are feeling fragile.”

The tears came then.

After giving me the glass, he left to stand guard. Soon, I found enough composure to face the world.

“I need air,” I told Meeker. “Please. Just down the street and back.”

The mean looking man nodded.
