“What?” he asked when I did not take his hand, but instead looked at him.

“Am I some weak creature?” I asked quietly, not wanting Beatrice, who stood on the steps to hear us.

“What? No. I…” He looked down at his hand, which was still raised, waiting to take mine.

I swallowed, watched as he did the same. Our alphas struggled more with our relationship than I had anticipated. Nothing about our relationship could be seen as some Fairy Romance. Each moment of happiness and security had been fought for.

“I shouldn’t have.” He clenched his jaw and withdrew his hand. Only five years of knowing this man allowed me to see something in his eyes I would have missed if I’d not felt it myself. Hurt. In rejecting his small offer, I’d rejected him.

“You can in the future,” I told him and before I could think about it too much, consider how many would see it, I took his mouth in a hard kiss. “I mean it, Benedict. If you offer your hand again, I won’t reject it. I’m learning.”

“Get inside.” His harsh tone was mitigated by his sweet pine scent. I nodded and swept Trix into my arms, pulling her inside.
