I looked down at the petite omega and saw the steel in her expression, the mirrored gold eyes. A glance at Drexler and I knew that he considered her worth far more than seventeen thousand pounds, worth more than a hundred thousand pounds. Yet I didn’t like the gleam there. This was not an alpha looking at an omega he wanted to make his mate. It was darker and far more dangerous.

“Will you be alright?” I asked her. She gave no indication of hearing, just sat down, smoothing her skirts and looking very much like a queen sitting on her throne. “She has powerful friends,” I told the other alpha.

“Why do you think he wants her?” Puck laughed. “Come on then…”

The plan was simple, almost too simple.

“You’ll go rescue your lady love from the boat at the docks. She’s called Little Dove. I go now.”

“I?” I frowned.

“I’ll deal with Stimpson,” Puck said. “It was my watch. My woman who… You’re best to stay here.”

“I’m coming with you,” Jack growled.

“No need. I’ll have some of the boys with me. Besides, my grudge with the little rat is of a longer standing than yours.”

“We are coming with you, Puck. You’ve known me long enough to know that I’m better than you in a fight.” Jacked squared up to Puck, who met his eyes, then smiled.

“Goddess, it will be good fighting on your side rather being the one you want to put a fist through. Let’s be going then.”

“Wait!”

I stopped on the pavement and turned to see Hippolyta push past Puck.

“Go tonight. Vauxhall, the ship, is called the Little Dove. Don’t let him tell you otherwise. Drexler confirmed it… I cannot go…” her eyes searched mine and her face had yet to regain any of its colour. For the first time since I’d met her, I thought she looked worried. “He… He won’t hurt me.”

I took her hand in my own. “If ever you need my help, Jack’s, Orley’s…” I waited for her to protest. She didn’t need an alpha’s help. I took her silence as permission to continue. “We will come to your aid, not because we are alphas and you are an omega. You are our sister. Perhaps not by blood but… You are an admirable woman who loves her family.”

“I think you’ve said enough,” Puck crowded Polly, who shied away from the other alpha. She bared her teeth at him, which might be mistaken for a smile.

“Leave her be,” I snapped.

“She’s lorded it over us all. She knows what she is doing.”

“My Lord, I shall take care of myself. Take care of my sister. She is brave and headstrong… and loves you. Very well, Robin Puck… Take me and do your worst.”

“I go with them. To help your sister… Go on… Return to your new lord and master.” He made a little shooing motion with his hand.

“Puck, bring Sarah back?”

Puck’s face softened. “She’ll be fine.”

The doorman came forward, grabbed her arm, and dragged her back into the Hell.

For a moment, my own concerns were put aside. The proud omega was willingly allowing herself to be led away. They might be invisible, but chains now bound her to the king of London’s underworld and his pugnacious henchman.

“Let’s get to Vauxhall before it is too late.”
