I shook my head I could not obey her I had nothing to do with Stimpson taking Beatrice though that sin was enough to condemn him to death know what he done to others where he represented that signed his death warrant I needed him I needed all alphas like him to know that there would be retribution Polly had said that we would know what to do we did packs took Beatrice under his arm he cradled her against his chest a hand brushing down her hair to her back and back again and again and again soothing her in a way I could not he did what I could not for I was in an alpha is rage determined and ready to take my hands to the throat of the man who had hurt what I had loved not just Beatrice my mate but he remarkable young unexperienced in the world. So pure and good yet trampled by the millions of doubts she had acquired through an afternoon, nay a day, it had been a day between her kidnap and her rescuing.

It is hard to strangle a man they make it seem so easy when they tell you their stories wrapping your hand around another’s throat crushing it until they cannot breathe takes strength and I was a strong alpha but my time with packs and Beatrice Had made me lose some of the muscle I’d gained while in the army I no longer commanded men and needed to be the most physically imposing alpha in the room now I was a gentleman the husband of the Lord and Lady now I boxed for pleasure never once thinking are you need to use my own strength to remove a fellow creature from this earth

A dead man bled more than I could have imagined. He lived longer too despite haemorrhaging blood

“Ho there!”

I turned to see an unknown alpha moving towards me, his hands up, though one of them held a pistol. I could not see his face, for the shadows were dark, but he was Black, and the only person I could imagine who might know I was here and who was Black, was Puck. I’d met him but once before when he’d come to Mama’s house looking for Hippolyta. He’d sat with me near half an hour, watching me with a friendly and open expression. The only words we’d spoken were just as he was leaving. “What makes your sister rise from her bed every morning?” I’d answered, “She hates the feeling of being trapped beneath her sheets, even though she gets cold easily, she hates being trapped between her sheets.” He’d laughed. Open and welcoming. “Should you ever need a friend, ask for Puck.”

“Puck?” I asked, still not certain it was him.

“Aye,” he called back, not loud but his whisper carried through the still night. “I’ve got you, Lady.”

I reached out for his hand and we made it down the narrow gangplank to the shore. From there he bustled me onto another boat, and then back to Pax’s house, where Tigg the housekeeper through her arms around me in floods of tears.

“Oh thank goddess!” I cried and ran towards them. “I… I…”

“Hush, vixen. Another time. We will talk later. For now…”

“Please. Just lie with me in my nest. I need you in my nest.”

I feared looking at my mates knowing how close I was to losing all control. I was safe, we were safe. That was all that mattered. Questions, answers those could come later once we were once again under control.

“Don’t. Please, Jack.”

I bit my tongue. An omega’s pleading wracked havoc on their alpha’s nerves. “You can’t change my mind omega.”

“I can’t lose you. If you go, if either or both of you go after Stimpson… What if you get hurt and I lose you? The only person allowed to shoot you is me. Jack? Do you hear me? I get to shoot you dead. Not him.”

A grin tugged at my lips. “I promise you only get to shoot me.”

“I…” She blinked the tears away. “I need a moment.”

Our mate, I realised, might always need time alone. Not because she did not love us—the words had not been spoken but I knew, looking at Jack he knew as well.

The moment stretched on I tried the door. Locked. My body sagged against it.

“Stupid,” Pax scoffed. He reached into his pocket as drew forth a key. “She’ll need us when she wakes.”

I still shook with blood lust even after they had wiped the stuff from my body. I’d feared both my mates would be afraid of me, that they would not understand the rage which demanded I take Stimpson’s life with my bare hands.

Now I had them safe in the nest and I had every intention of letting my alpha, not Pax’s, rule tonight.
