I blinked, realising she hadn’t missed me slipping into darker thoughts. “Sarah. How she would have fit.”

“I miss her too. But she wouldn’t have,” Polly said with a sad smile. “I once asked if she wanted you for her alpha. Asked if you found an omega and wanted her to join. Would she join a pack… She laughed in my face and told me she wanted to live to one hundred and have ten times as many lovers so that she would never run out of stories to tell.”

I ran a hand around her neck and pulled her close into my chest until her head rested over my heart. “We have each other.”

“We also have them.”

“Are you two planning on joining us? I’m starved,” Jude shouted.

“He likes to eat when he’s nervous,” she whispered. “Come on. I want to see Oberon’s face when I call him a hot meal.”

Oberon stood in front of the cold fireplace, hands clasped behind his back. “No,” he said with such a fierceness. “No.”

“It ain’t your place.” I recognised Mustardseed’s snappy voice. “I don’t work for you.”

“Mustardseed?” Polly rushed into the room. “What brings you here?”

“There has been an elopement.”

“You mean a rape.”

“Goddess, I hope it hasn’t come to that. Colbert’s youngest son has gone missing. Gretna for sure.”

“How do you know?” She asked.

His beta growl was nothing like an alpha’s but it was full of impotent fury. “The middle daughter–”

“Enough. That is your private business. We ride.”

“No.” Oberon barked. “You will stay here.”

“I am not yours to command,” she snapped. “If you choose to join me, you may. But I leave within the half hour.”

“Half hour?” Puck asked her retreating figure. She was running up the stairs.

“Fuck. Hold him back, Puck. I’ll talk to her.” I took off after her and found her in her bedroom, already stripped and pulling on a pair of breeches. “Will you understand why they—”

“You put up with me riding out.” She threw open the wardrobe and pulled out a dull brown jacket.

“They haven’t seen you like this.” I could only pray that she understood how impossible it was to be an alpha and watch your omega ride off into danger. “It goes against everything we are.”

“You felt like this before.” It wasn’t a question, and I brushed aside the irritation that tinged her words.

“Yes. When you didn’t let me come, I’d get drunk until I wasn’t safe to ride.”

A moment passed before she spoke. “You should have said something.”

“And have you accuse me of being an alpha? It was hard, Pol. So hard. I’d no knot but the urges were there. They never went away and the longer I spent with you, the more impossible it became. There were times when I’d have tied you up and locked you in a chest rather than watch you head out with nothing but a pistol to protect yourself.”

Her cheeks pinkened. “You’ve made your point. But I still go.”

“Then let us come with you.”

“Of course. Come. We haven’t a moment to lose.”
